BMW E60 520D. Manual vs auto - motor tax

Looking through DoneDeal, there is a difference of tax between E60 520D with manual and automatic. Automatics are €390-400 for N47 and €710 for M47. Manual E60 520D is €280.

I thought cars were taxed based CO2 and engine capacity, I'm not sure what the transmission has to do with it.

Do manuals have different engines? Does anybody know please? Why is it cheaper?

It's to do with co2 emissions, the older model autos were less fuel efficient but this has mostly changed since.

But why are manuals from the same year, with seemingly the same engine €280? Is manual more efficient than auto for CO2?

The 710 euro will be a 2007 or earlier on the old cc system. The lower ones are variants on the co2 system that started in 08.

Yes, certainly back then they were.

Back in those days only the manuals got stop/start, which helped for the CO2.

Regardless, the M47 is much more reliable so I'd pay the extra tax for one all day long, unless I knew the N47 had a timing chain replacement in the past few years.

The Auto box added a few extra co2's and put it into a different tax bracket.
