How long is reasonable to wait for test results?

Long story short, my 13 month old kitten had persistent colitis, and began presenting with increased diarrhea, loss of appetite and lethargy. The vet offered to do a routine ultrasound which took place last Monday, March 29th. My world was rocked when I went to pick him up and was told they saw lots of worrying things on the ultrasound and needed to run a lot of extra tests. They ran a full blood panel, histology, various other tests, and requested 3 days worth of stool samples. We dropped the samples in on Thursday but they rejected them as they had too much litter. Due to the bank holiday weekend, we couldn’t drop more in until Tuesday (yesterday).

The problem is, they keep telling us they don’t have any test results and haven’t decided how to proceed. I get that the long weekend slowed things down, but I’m going nuts not knowing what’s happening. It’s been 9 days since the ultrasound and he’s on no treatment. He still has awful diarrhea and isn’t eating much, so every day I’m worried he’s going to die :(. I feel like SURELY there’s something they can give us to manage his symptoms while they’re waiting on test results, but when I phone, they just fob us off saying “still waiting on results, we’ll be in touch as soon as we know anything”.

I’m completely caught between recognising that it takes time and thinking maybe I should just bring him to another vet. It’s only ever the receptionist we speak to when we call so I can’t even ask many questions, and I don’t want to come across like a complete Karen. On the other hand, the cat can’t speak up for himself so he’s relying on me to look after him!

Any advice on whether I just need to be patient, or if this time frame is unreasonable?

The last time I had anything like that done with the vet it was 3 days to get them back. Hope this helps.

Bailey had a fna done Sunday before last and we had results on the wed.. the lump was removed on Friday and I'd be hoping for results by this Friday to allow for the BH. Blood tests i'm lucky because they do them in house so no wait...otherwise expect results in a few days. It's not unreasonable to expect results and worry - I'd maybe call and leave a message for the vet to call you back so they might check/chase up the results. Possibly they have a hunch and want all the results back before they say either way. I wouldn't go to another vet (yet) after forking out for all the tests in case they decide to repeat them?

I hope your cat will be ok!
