Which would be the better buy for someone on a budget? The corolla is 1.4 and the Octavia is 1.2litre.Both are appealing from a motor tax point of view. Also I'd only drive a petrol car. Would appreciate your thoughts.

If a 2008 Corolla is similarly priced to a 2011 Octavia then either one is suspiciously cheap or the other is overpriced.

Those 1.2 engines in the Octavia were not great around reliability. The timing chains among other things give problems on them. The 1.4 Corolla would certainly be more reliable, a bit more refined and is less complex as it doesn't have a turbo. Corolla interior space and boot would be smaller than the Octavia however.

Corolla is less likely to give trouble even though the Octavia is a more comfortable and spacious car. They aren’t especially light on fuel and the post July 08 ones have higher tax as they’re on emissions. I’d probably look at the older shape Corolla as they’re a more pleasant car overall.
