Best plan for a car worth 2k. Scrappage or not?

Just spent 1k getting a 09 car worth at most 2k through the NCT.
The car owes me nothing but i'm worried to get through nct next year will be even more expensive so i'm trying to be pro-active.
Are scrappage deals worth considering or is it just a marketing ploy?
There seems to be a lot more hybrids/electrics coming on stream so maybe that is the way to go?
Ideally I want an automatic. Family of 5 so must be big enough and do about 15k km per year just on commute.
I'm starting with no money now and plan on saving the next 11 months and then ready to purchase either pcp or loan!!

My main question is really given the more economical new cars on market and possible scrappage deals would i be better jumping straight to new on a scrappage deal or just buy a car 5/6 years old and drive for 5/6 years again?! Is there an actual best way to do it or does it all cost same in the end??!

These "scrappage" deals are financial incentives or contributions from the manufacturers to sell new cars. Normally you get "scrappage" deals on the run up to the registration change. So October/November for the January new reg and May/June for the July new reg. However new cars are in short supply this year because they simply cannot get them built in the factories due to part shortages and Covid. So based on that imo I cannot see manufacturers offering scrappage deal incentives at the moment on cars they cannot build. Now that could change towards the end of this year if parts become available and Covid vaccinations start seriously ramping up across the EU. The only exception to this I could see if the likes of the Hyundai or Toyota get ample supply of models into stock in a drive to gain market share so they might offer something in the form of a scrappage scheme in May or June.

Being honest, if you just spent 1k to get it through the NCT then I'd keep it going for another while yet to get back some of that money on it. Maybe revisit it towards the end of the year and see if they start offering scrappage then, you will be looking at a 2022 new car then and your existing car probably won't depreciate much more by then.

When I've had older cars I'd try to put them through the NCT near 3 months out from expiry date to give me time should I need to make a decision to offload them and find another.

How do you go from a 2k car to day 20k ? Zero point , keep her going. You'll lose thousands the day you drive off the forecourt if money is a concern... do as the poster above says... bangernomics motoring, is by far the cheapest, assuming you aren't running a luxobarge...

I suppose I bought the car outright new in 09 for 19k so 12 years is 1500 per year cost roughly. the jump to a new car would be to keep maintenance, mpg, insurance and road tax down with a bit more comfort.
I'll take your advice though and keep an eyecon donedeal over the next year for bangernomics type cars if mine gives up the ghost

I'd say insurance and .motor tax savings likely negligible to non existant...
