    Hi all,

I’m looking to upgrade my car. Currently drive a 07 tdi jetta. I do about 15k km a year so not even sure I need a diesel anymore.

I’d like something with a decent boot, reliable around 20k to spend. I’m ruling out the Octavia straight away, I love the new model but think the old model is dated looking at this stage and not much body changes from 07 to 20.

In the running at the moment a 17/18 Tucson diesel as wouldn’t mind a suv for a change they look good and nice driving position. Also looking at 18 passats tdi.

Any other newish options you would recommend. I’d like to keep for 6 or 7 years and then buy an electric car when they are in my price range.

    Thanks

A Kia Ceed. A neighbour of mine had a Jetta and changed it for a Ceed estate.
SUVs are overrated. They are not nice to drive and they move around a lot and are less economical too. Your much better in a nice saloon or estate.

Think above poster may ( I might be wrong ) mean a Kia ProCeed - it is an estate car - I bought one there in October, pretty nippy, good on the petrol , plenty of room inside and a good level of equipment as standard - check one of them out...... Carwow have a review on youtube , but theres a couple of Irish reviews too....

For 20k you could get an electric Ioniq now, no need to wait a few years if you actually want one. I couldn't see the range being an issue on 15000km per year but it depends more on what your daily driving is like rather than yearly if you get me. (car is reliable for a bit over 200km in the summer and 180km or so in winter).

Looks wise I will let you decide for yourself if it's up to scratch or not, I like them but some wouldn't for sure :o

Here's one for sale in the midlands: https://www.electricautos.ie/viewanad.php?ad_id=2790516

Actually no I was suggesting the Ceed estate but yes the Pro Ceed is very nice too. Such a pity there is not more of them on the roads but I think that is because of the lack of engines Kia offered with them.

Lexus IS300h. A 2015/16 would be easily found in your budget.

No they are not. They are less aerodynamic than an equivalent saloon, hatchback or even MPV and what use is you higher driving position if everyone else is driving them. It's getting silly now. I seen a huge big Ford pickup the other day and it was just scary. They are too big for irish roads and more dangerous. I think people should have to take a road test every year if they are driving one of them things.

Nice looking cars, boot is supposed to be pretty small in them however with the battery. Was looking at them and the GS350h/GS450h as they're about the only 2nd petrol cars available in that era.

To offset the reasonable motor tax however the few insurance quotes I got were bloddy expensive at nearly €900 (full license with 10+ NCB). Insurance on my 2.0l Volvo is expensive at €550 for TFPT and difficult to get quotes as approaching 15 years old but with the Lexus the insurance loading excuse looks to be the 2.5l engine.

You just can't have nice things in Ireland, if it isnt' the outright cost resulting from VRT it's either motor tax or insurance.

Ye it's a joke alright and this bul**** about not insuring a car because it is 10 or 15 years old is stupid too. They have no problem with cars like that in the UK insuring them so why here?
As long as the car is regularly maintained and safe to drive it should be allowed on the road. Make inspection every 6 months if they have too but if people want and 10, 15 or 22 year old car then they should be allowed too. It's about time Irish people stood up against this insurance bul'sh,it and complained about it.

Thanks all for the great suggestions. I hadn’t really thought about either the Kia ceed or indeed the Lexus IS300. The Lexus is a great looking car, the boot isn’t massive but I could live with it I think. One thing with these which worries me though are they prone to catalytic converter thefts? I recall it was a problem with some Prius and Lexus hybrid models. I’m in Dublin and wouldn’t risk the hassle if they were being targeted

I was thinking the same and googled it. Seemingly on the Is300h the cat is attached to the manifold making it impossible to remove by jacking the car up. It's buried too far up in the bowels of the car to easily steal.

Whats the point on an nct if it deems a car as safe to drive on the roads and the bloody insurance companies ignore it on old cars?!

I like the cockpit style with real buttons. But I'd agree, somewhat dated, but Lexus always have been. They only ditched the 80s style LCD digital clocks this decade.

Aye thats true - you can only get a 1.4 Petrol, which I got, which is 140 BHP, which is pretty nippy for the car, I think anyway, or you can get a 1.6 Diesel, which is 115 BHP I think - I don't know what they are like regarding engine response etc, but I love the one I got anyway.
