Got a quote for 450 from a local garage for a gearbox oil change on my 520d, using genuine ZF parts and oil.

Car is approaching 40k miles. Would anyone have a recommendation for someone to do this job in the Kilkenny/Carlow area?

This is a funny one. ZF have a service interval of 80k-120k km on the ZF8 gearbox while BMW tell you it's a sealed unit that should last the lifetime of the car.

I've had a few BMWs with that gearbox and never had the oil changed or any issues with them. I was advised by a BMW indy once not to have it done unless the gearbox was actually giving problems.

And the guy I got a quote from said it should be done at 60k km! He's obviously in the business of servicing gearboxes but still.

I get that BMW say it's sealed for life, but I suspect their definition of life is different to ours.

Always remember....You may never change the past...But you can always change the oil.

You have to remember there's tons of high mileage 12 year old plus cars with that gearbox that's never been serviced. It's overkill to get it done at 40k miles tbh. I wouldn't let anyone touch it unless I was 100% sure they knew what they were doing.

Daltons in Portlaoise did mine for less than that price, not too far from you either.

On that car it is, on the BMWs it looks much more straightforward.

Isn't yours a vw golf r though with a totally different autobox that's actually listed to be serviced by the main dealer?

To be fair I didn’t notice any difference, 90k kms on my car.
Just felt happier to have it changed along with engine oil when I bought the car.

No not at all, they are a boring car after the novelty of acceleration wears off.
I do miss adaptive cruise control and the auto handbrake, but not the car itself.

4 series suits my daily use far better, more comfortable, better finished and quick enough.
