How have we got to the point where the youth no longer feel afraid of any authority or ramifications?

For me there's 2 main causes:

    1. Legally, children are completely untouchable unless they kill somebody. We have systems which are completely overused such as the Youth Diversion Programme, which seems to be used as an alternative to filling out paperwork. As a result, these children believe that there is 0 accountability for their actions, and this attitude often carries over to adulthood.

    2. Bad parenting. Bad parenting because alot of these parents don't give a damn what their wee angle is up to, and often times don't care until they have to pull off their pyjamas to go to court.

So what's the solution? I think the softy, softy approach has been proven to be very ineffective on todays youth, and we really need to toughen our approach to this. In place of the Youth Diversion Programme, I'd propose a military bootcamp to teach discipline and respect - the alternative would be 3-5 years in prison.

I'm happy to repeat this as often as necessary...

    Prison is not a deterrent.

No, but if it keeps the general population safer, then its a net benefit for society.

Fine I sort of agree as its more like a scumbag prep school or a criminal mentorship programme but what is a deterrent? It can't be all more incentives to be a good boy and no punishment when you are a prick.

What if prison were made more prisony......physical labour etc ... a place you really wouldn't want to go.

Mod: A reminder to have a read of the new AH Charter before starting new threads, this one does not pass the 'craic test' (patent pending)
