Trying to narrow down a potential issues with our 161 1.6tdi Octavia. Car has 75k miles & is due a full service in about 3k miles (doing it myself).

Current issue is a hot/burning smell after the car has been driven for more than 30 mins (short journeys are OK). Seems to be coming from the rear, there is no noise associated with it.

I checked the brakes assuming maybe a stuck calliper but that was good. Nothing in the wheel arches or tyres.

Any other obvious places or things that these cars are known for?

Is it a manual car? Could it be clutch burn?

    Heat from a DPF regen.

It wouldn't unusual to stand beside one of them and feel hot air hitting the bottoms of your legs during/ after a regen.

More then likely it's your DPF doing a regen.

If the car idles at 1000 rpm as opposed to 800rpm, then it’s doing a DPF regen, ideally you should keep driving it until revs go back to normal.

Ah the regen makes sense, last few cars were petrol or had the adblue system. Thanks everyone
