Purchasing paving slabs

I'm looking to get a complete overhaul of my patio area and would require around 38 sqm of new paving slabs. I've had a few landscapers out to look at it and each has told me they can get their own slabs (cheaper than main providers). I really like the look of Kilsaran Silver Granite (Shelbourne) or Tobermore (Mayfair) slabs.

Should I always be going through a landscaper to puchase the slabs, or could I look at purchasing these myself. I'm just trying to keep costs down where possible.

the theory is that they get a reduced price ex vat at 23% and then charge you 13.5% vat assuming it meets the 2/3 rds vat rule unless its a johnny cash job

Is there any way to find out the real price (ex VAT)?

not unless they show it in the bill.

OK. I was just wondering if I could get a price (ex VAT) directly from the likes of Kilsaran, so I have a good idea of costs of various slabs.

consumer price divided by 1.23 = pre=vat price before the trade discount which is never passed on to the home owner

In the real world some tradesmen will pass on the trade discount.

I'd be wondering where they're getting the slabs if not from main suppliers, sounds a little dodge.

Ah jaysus man, if you're in the game you're going to buy pallet loads of them knowing you will use them at some stage.

    What are you implying?

Is there an issue with paving slabs being counterfeited or stolen on a large scale that none else has heard about?

This time last year during the first lockdown I was looking for slabs also for my daughter who was building a house. I ended up going to a Roadstone depot who deal in paving, and fancy walls etc. What we didn't get was what my daughter initially wanted but what we did get was 3 pallets of seconds all the one size and colour at a great knock down price. We had to arrange our own delivery and even paying a lad for the use of a truck for an hour made it worthwhile.

Barney said the contractors don't buy from the main suppliers. I'd prefer to pay a bit extra and get them from roadstone/tobermore or kilsaran as I know production quality is very high, that's just me though, I'd say they can save a few pound buying elsewhere.

There's loads of small businesses, 1-2 employees making concrete products, that are legit, 3 within a 10 mile radius here, 1 lad makes a lot of product for Sisk, another supplies Woodies, it's not just the big names that are legit
