Trailer advice

Hi all, I’m not sure if this is the right section but there is probably someone on here who knows the answer.

I am looking to buy a car trailer for general purpose work. I would like to tow it behind by car and my landrover 110.

Looking at something 8x4 or bigger with mesh sides so that I can use it for turf in the summer.

Now since the landrover is on a classic policy, FBD will only allow it to tow a single axle trailer. This limits the possibilities a bit as most single axle trailers don’t have brakes.

Does anyone know how much turf would weigh in an 8x4 trailer? Or an equivalent so I could calculate back?

    Thanks

    Check your policy
I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually stipulate number of axles, rather it would be the weight.. ie under 750kg gross weight.

Quite a few trailers braked above 750kg on a single axle

The turf weight is a hard one to answer but, an 8 x 4 with mesh sides loaded with turf.. I'd expect you're over the unbraked trailer limit. Weight of turf can vary considerably.. moisture content, and density all playing a part in different weights

Thanks. It does actually specify a single axle with an unladen weight of 500kg. It kind of seems strange. I have attached the section of the policy that fbd referred to. I also questioned it with the classic department and the said the same thing. Sadly FBD seem to be the only company offering towing on a classic policy.

Yea I thought it would be over 750kg. I’d hope it would be fairly dry turf but you never know. Since I am going to buy a trailer, I might as well get a compliant set up. Just looking to get a rough idea as I might go for a bigger trailer depend on the weight of the turf

Looking at that image, it says "detached single axle trailer".

IMO that is cover for a single axle trailer while not attached to the vehicle.
You could have an attached double axle trailer within license and legal limits and you should be covered.

That’s what I thought when I read it first but two different people in fbd said I can only tow a single axle. I even pointed out how a double axle would be much better. I’d much rather get a double axle trailer, easier to tow, manoeuvre and push around when not attached.

I think I may wait until fbd opens branches again and go back in for a chat to confirm. Maybe 3rd time lucky.
