    Hi folks,
Looking to get a 4' 6" drum mower for my MF 135 to keep on top of rushes and clean up pasture and if the weather is decent cut a bit of hay. Ground is stone free so i would think the drum is the best all round solution. Other than the PZ 135 is there any other small mower available?

If anyone knows of one that might be for sale let me know
    Thanks in advance

Honestly any 4'6" drum mower you get will be the bones of 30 years old at this stage. If you can pick up a 5' or 5'6" disc the 135 will run it no problems.

Fresh one here but not cheap

silly question but is a 5'6" disc mower easier on a tractor than 5'6" drum?
Is a drum more reliable than disc (less moving parts)?

IMO there is no comparison between a disc and a drum mower. A well minded disc will cut 10k acres but a drum will have problems after 1k no matter what.
Disc would be much easier to drive and if you're only cutting your own and it's clean there should be no issues.
Repair bills on a disc if it goes wrong will likely be higher which is the downside.
I think the trouble with drum mowers is that they are designed to be on the ground all the time and when they are lifted all the weight is hanging off it.

    Thanks, makes sense

In disc mowers are there any particular name better than others, or ones to avoid due to hard to source parts?

If you could pick up a Kuhn 4 disc mower in good condition ( GMD 44), it would serve your needs.

Most of the more established brands would be ok. Lely, Kuhn, Krone, possibly Vicon/Kverneland.
Like everything there is a bit of luck in involved when you buy something

Just jumping in here, if considering a Vicon, there is a CM165 and the newer model CM167. The CM167 is night and day ahead of a CM165. We've had both in the past and couldn't believe the difference when we changed.

Would the 135 drive a cm165 in heavy rushes?

Thanks for all the info guys

If very heavy rushes, you’ll be going in a low gear.

We had a 4’6 Kuhn disc mower for about 30 years and it’s unknown the cleaning up and silage it cut.

I use a 6ft topper on the 135 now as the mower needed serious upgrade at the time and didn’t have the money to do it.

Is a lad is cutting with a 135 I'd say he isn't going contracting and cutting big acres. We would have only had a 5'6" drum mower here for a long time and it would have done well over 1000 acres.

One here for example that doesn't seem to have been used very much https://www.donedeal.ie/mowers-for-sale/drum-mower-5ft-6/27543666
No marks or dents on the drum

Couple of places seem to be selling this random make for 1500 + Vat https://www.donedeal.ie/mowers-for-sale/drum-mower/26985739

I agree with this of course but the OP is asking about getting a 4'6" drum which will be old and well used at this stage.
The 135 will be fairly balls out on a 5'6" drum IMO but should run the same size disc easy enough.

It would no bother, but I'd advise you to steer clear of a CM165 and get a CM167 if it's a Vicon you're going for.
