Hi all. Really interested in a 2018 A3 but I'm reading some articles regarding the kangaroo effect of the 1.5 petrol engine. Can anyone confirm if this is an old issue that has since been rectified or is it an ongoing problem and should steer away from this model? Thanks in advance for any help

It still exists on a 2021 Leon so one presumes so. You get used to it though, and it’s only when cold.

Hmm..... Quite off putting though. I'm a stickler for good, well maintained cars. Disappointing that VAG didn't come up with a solution for it.

I have a 201 Passat with that engine and I was aware of this issue before I bought the car.

My Passat is a DSG and I've only noticed a very slight 'kangaroo' effect on a cold start which lasts for less that 10 seconds and doesn't bother me at all. If I hadn't been aware of this, I'd say I'd scarcely even notice it. Only seems to happen on colder mornings, say 5c or lower.

I believe the effect is less noticeable in automatics though, and I have no experience of the effect in a manual car.

I had some concerns before I got the Passat but I was glad I bought it. It's a lovely quiet engine and will easily give 50+ mpg on long drives.

Thanks for that. Its an automatic I'm looking at. So you are happy to live with it obviously? Its not that big a deal? That's good to know.

Yes, I have the car 13 months now but only have 7k done so far with the lock-downs. I'm picky enough about cars and engines and I'd say you'll be very pleasantly surprised at the 1.5's smoothness and quietness.

From what I can see, this 'kangaroo' thing is overstated. It's only the odd time I notice it, and it's only on the cold start in the morning I've ever noticed it.

If you do buy the A3, I'll be interested to hear your impressions of it. I had a 141 A3 Saloon with the 1.4 TFSI engine and that too, was a very nice car.

Wasn’t there a software update last year that fixed the issue?

I've no idea. Hoping someone here could clarify. Tried googling, but articles seem a little unsure as to whether it's actually sorted it permanently or if the issue comes back...
