BMW after sales - what’s reasonable repair time?

    Hi

I’ve a 2011 f10 with pro nav bought 2 years old from bmw dealer in Dublin.

Car has been serviced through independent it’s whole life - I’ve owned it 7.5 years.

I’ve had oil changed every 10k, got timing chain replaced etc and detailed it every year. Car has 170kms and is immaculate. I intend to hold onto for another 4 years.

In January the washer system went and awhile later CIC Randomly rebooting.

BMW dealer fixed washer system and suggested leak may have caused CIC issue but it’s still happening so now they want €2k just to replace it.

    - how couled water leak in window washer system impact CIC, would it not be protected by waterproof casing?

    - am I being unreasonable not to expect this kind of problem since car is so old? I thought CIC should last a lot longer so this isn’t a wear and tear issue?

    - are they being unreasonable saying it just needs to be replaced? They just re did the software and same issue but I thought surely they could investigate ore and actually try to repair it

    - goodwilll gesture from bmw completely mad to even ask for?

I’m pissed off because I spend €1,300 last year getting timing chain replaced which IMO was a design flaw from BMW.

    Any advice very welcome.

Based on what you've said I really can't see any reasonable way you'd expect a main dealer to offer good will on this. You've had it serviced at an independent garage all its life with you.

The water leak is entirely possible and it affecting the electrics is a bit of bad luck really.

Why not get a BMW specialist to look at it?

The are expensive units when they go wrong, cant really see any grounds for goodwill here unfortunately.

As you plan to hold onto the car this could be a good time to look into an Android head unit and gain all sorts of new functionality for a fraction of the cost?

Do you have a good battery? If you aren't sure that its water damaged then if you have a weak battery that could be causing the boot looping cic

Might have started happening at the same time by coincidence

Those CIC units are well known for failing. Given your car has an independent service history rather than a BMW dealer history it's going to be very hard to get BMW to offer any goodwill especially on a 10 year old car. Half the battle of getting goodwill is getting the dealer to fight your corner with the manufacturer and in this case as your not a regular customer of theirs through servicing, etc it's very hard to see them wanting to put any effort in. You have nothing to lose by asking though.

If you are going down the route of paying to have the CIC unit replaced yourself then you might as well replace it with an aftermarket car play/android auto unit. There are plenty available for well under 2k. Talk to a guy on here called Harcrid who has a similar aged F10 and he replaced his recently with an aftermarket unit. He seems happy with it. This is the thread he posted in with it: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=116304536

Would you not try DL Motorworks or another specialist and get a second opinion before giving BMW all that money?

Do you need a working cic and they piggyback or is it a full replacement? Would like to fully replace the ccc in my dads e63. Its crap and isn't immune to randomly rebooting

Yeah frozen is right. Those android units are just a replacement screen that can flick over between an android interface and back to the BMW system. You'll need to sort the stock system first. Good opportunity maybe to ungrade to nbt or else find and owner that has done this and is looking rid of their CIC system.

Yep you still need a working CIC system as any of the Android type systems are seperate and just plug into the screen pretty much.

I think even replacing the CIC system you will need to have the replacement unit coded to the car. Presumably its the same unit for a lot of BMW cars of that era and depending on what car its in the unit will need to talk to the car to know what options are fitted (reversing camera, parking sensors etc).

Valdas won’t do the electronics side of things.
Breach is an excellent mechanic but I don’t think they touch them either (especially after the death of the main guy 2 years ago).

You need someone that specializes in this. It may actually be cheaper to upgrade to the newer system as the 2011 car has near the same as the E60 which is prone to this issue.

I’ll root out who I’ve seen doing it.

No connection to these guys. They are on the Facebook bmw group.

It might be worth trying ICE in Ranelagh? They’re not cheap but they’re cheaper than the main dealer.
