Pulling a Homer (to succeed despite idiocy)

Occurs with me more often that i care to admit. Thought this be a decent thread to overcome the Glenroe feeling on a cool March Sunday night.

My story... After a long few years slog in college and collecting an I.T degree, myself and amigos were cast aside with any job offers despite multiple attempts and ended up in semi-skilled work for a year or 2.

Giving up the ghost applying after a while, we then learned of one pal who had gone to India for the year to get experience. Despite making Indian wages, we were mad jealous of him given that even the 1 year would get him in the door for a Grad-level job back home. Raging about this as we had similar results and a friendly rivalry with him (my own results were a copy/paste of his in all exams for instance), we cursed our luck.

I kept in touch with the rest over email and heard whispers that our old chum had moved back to Ireland and was looking to get in touch with me as a local company in my city had hired him and he wished to get some accom advice and catch up.

:mad: I went ape. Never before thinking to apply to them (no experience, no thanks), i figured that i was at least as good as this fella. Sure as hell, I put together a kick-ass application and after a loooooooongggg recruitment process, started the job 3 months later.

Never would have applied without said news.

Anyway, the twist? The other lads later revealed that he never applied for that job - their story of him applying to the place was just a stupid prank that got out of hand.

10 and a half years in that place - murderers get out quicker.:rolleyes:

Well, there you go.... ten and a half years wages that you weren't expecting.

Every cloud , as they say.

Over the years I got quite a few promotions that I felt were 'lucky'. But to be totally honest, there were attempts where I fell flat on my face. I left school at 16, but over the years did many night classes to get certifications - simply to prove my determination.

Can't attest to any 'Homer' successes, but must ask my ex-colleagues after Covid. They might have a different view :pac::pac::pac:
