Looking to buy a SUV, 2018 or 2019
Which is best, that holds its resale value would be a bonus too

    I like the 3008

A car which holds its value will cost you more second hand.
Because of the shape of a depreciation curve, the older the car gets, the less of a margin it holds over other cars.
Banking on residuals only really works if you’re buying new, and comparing new cars for similar money.

    Lazy answer = VW Tiguan.
Actual answer = Dacia Duster. They hold incredible values second hand because they’re so cheap to start with.

In reality though, the 3008 is immensely popular, and will continue to be for the next few years. They’re not an overly expensive car new, so you should get a 2018/2019 for reasonable money, and still be able to get decent resale.

I get the residual case for it but getting a duster instead of a 3008 seems mad to me.

Well yeah, I wouldn’t be buying one either. The point is that the best way to combat depreciation is to spend less.

If you’re familiar with the old analogy of the kid who gets picked last in PE for teams, that has a whole host of conditions and non athletic attributes - that’s your Dacia.

It’s like taking the fat girl to the debs. You might get the ride but you won’t be showing it off to all your friends

    Not saying that at all.
It’s a cheap car. It has the same drivetrain as numerous Renaults and Nissans. They just have more basic tech, less well designed interiors, not as good sound deadening etc.

They just don’t appeal to me, they’re not terrible cars or anything.

For the money they’re great, and serve to highlight how overpriced most cars have become.

There is nothing wrong with them mechanically but I reckon you would be better off getting a 3 year old of another brand that is better for the same price as a new Dacia.

Renault Kadjar with the 19inch alloys are lovely. That's normally the top spec model by the way.

As for Dacia. They use proven reliable mechanicals and the new Sandero is very good a big improvement over the current one and nearly as good as a Clio or a Polo but cheaper. The current Duster is very good and looks nice in top spec but it is missing a few things and you can see inside where costs were cut but still far better then the first model. The next one in a few years time will be a big improvement.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
