Food for Blackbirds & Thrushes

I have created a ground feeder for the thrushes & blackbirds that frequent my garden - the feeder has a 65 mm x 65 mm grid, which keeps out the crows & jackdaws. It works very well.

My query is: buying food for the birds is quite expensive. What type of household waste / excess food is suitable for blackbirds & thrushes?

    Thanks, in advance.

Birds like thrushes and blackbirds don't need feeding as they can find plenty to eat in any garden without any help unless the ground is frozen solid.

Leave out household veg waste, attract snails and slugs - collect at night, compost veg waste, leave snails and slugs for thrushes and blackbirds

We leave out apples and the occasional pear for them.
