Attic insulation and loft boards

I was just wondering roughly how much it would be to insulate an attic and also lay floor boards down.

House is a 3 bed semi, hip roof and the area in question is 5.3m x 8.7m.

Would love to hear if anyone has done similar or any companies they may have used.

    What headroom do you have?

The attic is fairly small - wasn't able to even convert it.

I'm 5"10 and have to tilt my head when standing at the highest point if that makes sense.

Sounds like a fairly similar set up to what I have. Do you also have W trusses making it even more awkward.

It's a hell of a job and hard to see how it would pay a company to do it properly. I had 100mm of fiberglass insulation and lifted that in sections to seal any breaks in the thermal envelope below for partitions and entrances for services such as electric and water. Replaced insulation and then sheathed all electric wires in trunking as was increasing the insulation from 100mm to 400mm. For insulation I used 170mm earthwool rolls from B&Q which were on offer for 3 for €60 at the time. Layed those in a double overlap on top of existing fiberglass insulation.

For any sections you're overboarding you have the option of loft legs:

or raising it with new joists. I went with joists as not fully convinced as to how stable the loft legs would be plus you're restricted to the fixed height of the legs. In my case I used 6"x2".

For flooring one thing to be mindful of if you have W trusses is that when you raise the floor you'll have multiple obstacles for each upright of the W. Given the limited working space and obstacles I used the small loft packs which are in sheets of 4'x1':

They're more expensive than the standard 8'x2' sheets but in my situation I'd have had to cut most of them anyway loosing a lot of the rigidity of the tongue and groove and the smaller boards were much easier to manage.

Other than that I used a few boxes of screws, mostly 4x60mm along with some heavier duty 6x70mm for securing the joists.

My attic is a bit bigger overall but you only need to floor a small section for access and storage. In total I floored 13m2 which is prenty big enough for my needs.

Thank you for the detailed reply Dr_Colossus. I'll read through and see if I can make an attempt at doing it myself.

My attic is not W but more of a standard trusse with beams going right across about 3 ft high from the floor.

Just in terms getting somebody to do it - do you mean its not worth the money as they would just charge alot?
