I was just wondering why the Irish government has singled out Austria as a high risk country a long with Brazil, South Africa and its neighbours, United Arab Emirates amongst others? People arriving into Ireland from these countries are to self isolate at home or eventually in a quarantine hotel whenever the government gets legislation into law. Austria is like ourselves. The Covid cases are coming down and is of similar levels to Ireland. Is there a lot of cases os strains of concern happening there? Is is just simply that it is a popular destination at this time of the year for ski and snow holidays.

They unfortunately have quite a number of cases of the SA variant.

Austria is currently struggling to contain an outbreak of the new variant first identified in South Africa. Neighboring Czech Republic is facing hospital bed shortages on top of a political crisis over lockdowns.

Germany has already made the decision decision to close its borders to Austria and the Czech Republic in a bid to help reduce the spread of SA variant of Covid-19.

They are getting ripped with the Kent variant as well. The Spanish opening up the bars and everything today as well as Italy. They will get hammered if it reaches them and back to square one again. I think the UK & Ireland have had the worst of it now like.

Austrians themselves can’t freely enter/exit the Tyrol region.

Germany is also closing the border.

The South African B.1.351 coronavirus variant was found to be prevalent in Austria's Tyrol region and the British B.1.1.7 variant was found circulating in the Czech Republic. This prompted German authorities to declare the border regions virus mutation areas
