Getting rid of old car

    I have a 06 Focus saloon.
I got a new car recently so need to get rid of the Focus.
Its mechanically sound, 130k kms on the clock, taxed til September (€385/yr), but the boot is letting rain in, and now there's mould under the boot carpet, and I can see some starting in the main cabin.

So basically the car is mechanically sound, but the leak needs to be fixed.

Is it worth trying to sell, or should I just scrap it? I know someone who donated their old car to the local fire station to practice the Jaws of Life on, so I might just do that.

If it has a decent bit of NCT left on it and it has 6 months tax on it then it must still be worth at least worth €750 imo even with the leaking boot. If you bring it to a scrap yard they will give you around €80 quid for it, you will only be able to claim 3 months of the remaining tax back if you scrap it. I'd stick it on donedeal @ 975 to start with and see how you get on. Be honest in the advert about the boot leak.

Throw it on adverts, someone will take it.

You’ll sell pretty much any car to the ‘bittataxannabittaNCT’ crowd.

Whatever you do don't hand it over to some randomer without it being either officially scrapped or officially transferred ownership to, otherwise you will have no end to it and fines associated with it.

Leak is most likely coming from rear light cluster. Seen a few of these leak there and it’s an easy enough fix.

As said above, stick it up for sale and be upfront about the leak. Someone could be stuck for a cheap car to keep them going and this might suit nicely.

Forgot to say, NCT goes to January. I think the covid extension is 3 months, so it's got until April. Is that right?
Not arsed putting it through, even though I know it'll pass. Never failed yet anyway.

Yes, if it was due in January then it gets extended until April. Taking the short test into account, I'd probably ask €500 and take the nearest offer. If you scrap it the most you would get is around €80/€90 from a scrap yard plus whatever motor tax refund you are due(there needs to be at least 3 months tax on it to get a refund).

Expect to get plenty of low ball offers and swaps though.

7 months tax and 2 months NCT, you'll have no bother selling that for a few 100. Put an ad on adverts and post it here in the for sale thread.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

There is a thread here for cars €500 and below. Post it in there.
