Nct retest twice?

If I fail the retest can I book another retest provided it's still within 30 days of the original test? Or will I have to take the full test again?

I failed my nct for the headlight wiper blades not working. Garage says it'll be a while before they can get that part as it's so obscure.

He said it's possible they will pass it if I just tape over the little compartment/hole the wipers come out of.

I also failed on rear fogs, a faded bulb and a windscreen wiper which will be guaranteed fixed for retest.

Are you talking about headlight washers?

    Does your car have HIDs/xenons?

Yes sorry the washers. I don't think I've ever seen them in action, only as a failed item on nct sheet, so I was imagining micro wiper blades which was pretty dumb😀

    Don't think it's hids no

You must have washers or wipers for hid lights (blue tinge) . You don't need wipers for ordinary halogen lights. You might pass with then fully removed. You can download full nct manual and look at relevant section. I assume you can pay retest fee multiple times. They might be a visual free retest item

So did it fail on them not working or because there’s a sharp edge on the bumper in their absence?

    What car is it?

Never realised that, do they test them or just look to see what headlights you have and that they're there if needed?

HID are brighter. Car must have auto levelling headlights, no wheel inside car to adjust and typically washers. The aim is not to blind incoming traffic with brighter headlight that may be pointing up or dirty causing light beam to shine wrong way. I assume they can easily see them from light colour and presumably should test them

I understand what they are and how they work, I was wondering if they actually checked the washers worked.

having failed on that item, I can't see removing and taping over working, as they'll be looking specifically for them working won't they?

Yes...if you have lights that need washers then the washers need to work.

Save digging through the NCT manual for retrofitted HIDs in particular

    https://www.rsa.ie/Documents/NCT/New%202018/HID%2024.09.2018.pdf
I have retrofitted HID Headlights on my car. Will it fail the NCT?
HID headlamps may be retrofitted to a vehicle however, in order to pass the NCT, the retrofitted HID kit (i.e.
lamp and bulb) must be type approved and the vehicle to which it is being fitted must be compatible for HID
lamp usage i.e. the vehicle is approved to have a HID kit fitted. Your vehicle’s original manufacturer will be
able to clarify whether your vehicle is compatible for a HID kit or not.
An approved headlamp kit retrofitted to an incompatible vehicle will result in NCT failure. The same applies
to an unapproved kit retrofitted to a compatible vehicle. HID bulbs retrofitted into regular halogen
headlamps is also classed as a reason for failure at NCT

    Not according to

    • The HID headlight assembly (i.e. headlamp and bulb) is fitted with a functioning headlamp levelling system,
either manual or automatic. If the vehicle has self-levelling built in to the suspension then this can be
considered to fulfil the function of headlamp self-levelling.
