Dunno if this has been asked already but do non-Garda speed vans operate during Level 5 lockdown?

Yes they do I know of someone that was recently caught in January and got the fine in the post.

Yes, surprisingly passed one on the motorway the other week going to work. Didn't think they operated on motorways, dual carriageways yes because you'd pass them everyday going Limerick to Shannon but the other week was my first time ever seeing one on a motorway.

They took over the Garda zones including town zones about 2 years ago I think.
Does the Garda even have speed vans anymore?. Haven't seen one in years.

Spotted them last couple of Fridays parked up on Oscar Traynor/Tonlegee Road, were 2 of them getting traffic going each direction. I got so excited passing each I had the shakes in my hands which resulted in me accidentally flashing cars approaching them.

As far as I know the Garda speed vans were taken out of service. Extra hours were given to the go safe vans and they are operating on the motorways now as well

Given that the Garda speed van locations were public information I take it then that the private ones are still "hidden" as it were?

There is a map of locations on the garda website, but they are basically allowed everywhere/a lot of places. They also cover road works even if not on garda map.

They were at the M50 toll southbound this week, roadworks are there often too.

The old gardai vans could go anywhere.

Typically you get a garda letter within 2 weeks and if you pay fine you get a letter from RSA a few weeks later saying you have penalty points applied to your licence from date x for 3 years

There used to be signs at the start of each zone (none at end) but with the latest updated zones they no longer put up signs. The vans tend to stick to pre approved exact parking spots

Should they not be working from Home now?

Park it on M1 citybound, just after the airport exit.
Would be pulling in tens of thousands per day.

I appreciate it could be just coincidental, but I do a lot of mileage. Hadn't seen one around the place for weeks. However, for the last 3 days I've seen 3 on each individual day. All parked in places I'd never seen them parked before (mostly 50 zones where it would be easy to go over the limit, which is unfair!).

There was one placement in particular that I thought was decent, though. He was on a straight stretch of 100kph N road. Clear as day. If you didn't see him you deserved your fine. I've no issue with that kinda thing.

You forgot to give the locations :pac:

Yes, they do. I saw them in a national road in Galway a few days ago.

One of the operators must live on Mulgrave St in Limerick city, the feckin van is permanently parked up down there!

To be clear the gardai still do speed checks with the "hair dryers", but they have to stop you to get the fine/points.

There's little to no excuse to get caught by a speed van.

A couple of weeks ago there were 2 separate GoSafe vans on the N7 coming out of Dublin. One just near Kingswood and another at Naas.

Only ones I can remember off the top of my head (as in, i'd actually know the locations) were in Cavan:

One was roughly HERE, with the rear of the van facing west (big, wide 50kph stretch, easy to go over the limit, especially once you've passed the mcdonalds/petrol station entrances etc.)

Another one was around HERE catching cars leaving the town. Another spot where it's easy to go over, as you leave the town and head to a wider road and are about to hit an 80 zone.

    And in Louth:

Approximately HERE. I don't like this one, as the road here was 100kph for a long, long time. In the last year or so it changed down to 80, but then also in the last year, they've removed the 80 signs altogether (as the previous road is an 80, so presumably the argument is the limit doesn't change so the signs aren't needed). However, anyone that doesn't travel the road very often would easily be caught out thinking it's still 100kph. Rear of the van was facing west, catching people who would normally speed up into the former 100 zone.
