No one is making up excuses for boards.ie, they can save those for the Garda at the airport.

I'm already away but if I was in Ireland I'd feel no shame whatsoever in taking a holiday. I'd send you a postcard.

Sure I don't care if you're away on holidays, off ye go, just don't understand why, if posters are happy enough to go, they are on here trying to justify themselves.
    Just doesn't make sense

The village folk are on their way, burning pitch forks in hand. Did you not receive the memo stating that we are all supposed to be miserable until further notice? If they want a positive spin, it's one less person to spread it in the community :pac:

    Who is miserable?
The only miserable people I see are the ones going on and on about how Ireland is the worst county in the world, how we are going to be locked in our houses forever!
    Jaysis, cheer up :)

Don't worry about me, the sun is shining and all is well. A holiday would be nice though. As I explained in my previous lengthy post (won't bore you with the details) I do like to travel, and escape (wait for the reaction to that word) from life and work. Besides, 30+ degree days are few and far between here.

I don't know what people would expect to see and read on a travel related thread.

If this was the pub closure thread, you are obviously going to discuss pubs and when they will reopen. If is was the covid restrictions thread, you are obviously going to talk about the covid restrictions currently in place.

So going by those two other threads I just mentioned, this happens to be the travel thread, where people are likely going to talk about travel and share their experiences travelling during the pandemic or future plans for travel. Or discuss the collapse of the aviation industry.

This is hardly anything of much surprise. What is the purpose of this thread if we aren't going to discuss travel? the moderators should shut it down if travel is not needed to be discussed any longer.

You'll notice that there isn't a time restriction in the thread title. You can still talk about travel. For example, I have tentative plans to go to Central America at the tail end of the year. If there was no corona I'd have been there next month as the purpose is to meet a friend over there for her birthday. Nobody is stopping you from talking about travel or the effects of restrictions on your plans. They can justifiably be against those who are engaging in selfish behaviour such as trying to bypass public health restrictions.

Notice that I managed to mention travel plans without moaning about the government or conspiracies or human/constitutional rights or trying to find ways to get away with breaking laws. I also managed to mention it without sneering at people who are actually following the rules or even castigating those who are putting themselves in danger while working on the front lines.

There are restrictions against travelling at the present time. I understand that there are a lot of people who think that they are unique and special and that because they like to travel that exceptions should be made for them. They need to know that that doesn't actually make them special. I'd imagine that 99% of people like to go to see different places.

    Oh me too.
    Can't wait to travel!

When did I ever suggest there was some sort of time restriction on this thread? We have been talking about travel for the last year. I'm glad you are going abroad at some point, and you are willing to discuss your plans on this thread. Because that is the sole purpose of this thread.

I think you have made a lot of false assumptions there. Not everyone feels that they are 'special' or 'unique' and most people aren't moaning. They are simply discussing their travel plans. It's the reason this thread exists. You placing everyone in the same pigeon hole which is rather unfair.

I think some users come on this thread and they seek to have a go at people who are looking to travel. Just my opinion. There is no other reason to be here unless you are interested in travel. There is no point in this thread unless people talk about travel.

The thread is full of posters who don't want to follow restrictions who justify it by "I like to travel".

LeeroyJ a few posts above was justifying his recent two week jaunt to Lanzarote because he likes to travel. In the same post he complained about teenagers in Ireland not wearing masks properly.

But in all honesty why would you be bothered about that? you don't know these people and you will never meet them for the rest of your life.

You are following the restrictions, and that's all that should be important on a personal level.

Because I know people in the vulnerable category who could very well die if they caught this thing. It has to be managed on a macro level.

Once you introduce an attitude that anyone can do what they want then there is no point in anyone bothering to do anything. Most people will say "why should I bother when X is doing Y".

I'm just going to worry about me and my duties, and not care about who follows the restrictions or not. Because you aren't going to get full compliance after 12 months. It's just the reality, because people are worn out and fed up of this situation.

People have tried really hard for the last year and we have been through multiple lockdowns. Some people have lost their jobs and are feeling isolated away from family and friends. People have worked hard to protect the elderly and vulnerable.

I hope people would keep on protecting the elderly and vulnerable. Hopefully they will all get the vaccine soon.

The sooner the vaccine is rolled out the better.

Do people think travel will be ok by summer 2022 ?
At this painfully slow rate of EU vaccine rollout, I am not sure I will be done by then, it is turning into an absolute ****ing farce.

    less then 1% a week ....

    JOKE

    JOKE

It could take that long for full restriction free movement, without testing etc. I believe it will open up a little more (no fines but non essential 'advice' still in place, along with testing) this summer. It's fine for the government to follow the over cautious Nphet advice, and for them to appease the outraged, but sooner or later, external influences and the prospect of serious loss of connectivity for Ireland will force their hands. The testing and self quarantining rules will remain for a few months at least, and rightly so while cases are high.

This is a quote from the Indo today:

'The hope is that around 80pc of the population will have got a first dose by end of June which could pave the way for staycations .'

'could'??? This prevailing attitude in the media is what will doom us to eternal lockdowns and post pandemic economic devastation.

With low infections and negligible deaths at 80%, there is absolutely no reason not to restart international travel and tourism. None.

    You're all so pessimistic

    I think it'll be 2100 personally.

    79 years is fairly reasonable.

I understand internet gives a voice to everyone but...why people care if others travel (given that testing is mandatory)? Are people's life so sad?

And I'm gone in mid June no matter what.

Aer Lingus must be getting optimistic about summer travel. I’m being bombarded with emails the last week on deals.

And this despite pushing staycations on everyone last year, when there was no vaccine at all.

They must have learnt their lesson from all those staycation breakouts.. oh no wait there was none.

Surely people won't keep buying into these farcical measures much longer.

Have flights booked in July ...The prices have actually fallen about 10% in the last month as have been keeping an eye on them. Demand must be very soft. I suppose the thought of an extra €800 for PCR tests for a family of 4 would dampen enthusiasm :(. Even if we were 'Green' on the traffic light system there is no way our 'Abundance of Caution' will scrap testing this side of 2022.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,809 ✭✭✭Hector Savage

^^ That's the killer for us, this PCR crap, will add the guts of 1000 eur for a family holiday, means I can't be arsed - well unaffordable really.

If ye travel to the UK, UK doesn't require you to have a PCR test.
Ye need one on the return to Ireland.
Save a few bob on the cost of a holiday right there. ( I think!)
