    Hi guys,

I sent a tender pack to a construction company in the first week of December and I'm still waiting for a price. Is this normal, is it because of Covid restriction, or should I take it as an indication that they're not interested in the project? Thanks.

    Depends on the company.

The first week in December is the worst possible time to send a tender, especially now - between end-of-year pressure, Christmas break, and covid, it's quite possible yours got forgotten.

I'd contact them and ask them if they are preparing a tender or not. Some QS's take a "squeaky wheel" approach to completing tenders, and if you stay quiet, you get pushed down the list of priorities.

Thanks very much for that. I've asked a few times for an update and he keeps saying he's "working on it".

So you tendered 3-5 companies, and youre waiting on one?

Yes I sent out three, but the other two were sent later so I'm still waiting for them to come back with prices.

Minimum 6 weeks tender return time for anything of significant value. Add 2 weeks for Christmas. And take into consideration that a lot of construction companies just aren't bothering pricing jobs unless they're already certain of getting the contract because they don't need the work and/or don't have the capacity to do the job if they get the contract anyway.

If your design team has the will & the skill, it could be worth running an open competition via eTenders. The vast majority of buyers there are public sector, but there's a few private companies/organisations buying, so it's clearly possible for them to register.

I wouldn't bother going down this route for less than €100k (as you'd need to do price/quality assessment, which would add to the professional fee for your design team), but there'd be the prospect of some real competition for the job which could result in significant savings.
