I'm trying to track down a part for a friend's bike. He got a new Boardman SLR 8.9 recently but managed to destroy the threads on his left crank installing new pedals.

The crankset is FSA Gossamer Megoexo. Part number 6029. Neither Boardman nor FSA have it which is very frustrating as the bike is brand new. The crankset is obviously not new. Anyone have any ideas?

It might be easiest just to replace the whole crankset? Loads of second hand cranksets floating around. I've at least six! Alternatively it might be possible to get a steel fabricator to rethread the damaged one?

Out of interest if the bike is new how come the crankset isn't??

Yeah I think I will just switch it out to a 105 if I can't find a crank. The rest of the groupset is 105, r7000. It's a press fit bb which I would need to swap out too ... and punching out a press fit kinda scares me!

By not new, I really should have said not recent. It seems to be a crank from at least 4 years ago and that's why FSA don't have stock.

I'm not 100% sure but I thought you could just swap to a Shimano crankset without changing the BB. Aren't they both 24mm?

Removing press fit bottom brackets is a nightmare! I've done it successfully but also failed to do it! Part of the reason I've so many cranksets is that I intended to use them but couldn't get the bb out so bought another crankset instead!

Alas it's a BB30. Though i just got a reply from chain reaction and they suggested an adapter. So I might just do that for him and fit the 105.

I know I'll crack the frame if I try to remove the press fit bb. I will try it one of these years but on one of my bikes!!

I did the same a few years back on my Shimano cranks. I drilled out the crank hole with damaged threads and tapped it to take stud bar. Then I drilled and tapped some stud bar to suit the pedals, cut the stud bar to length and installed it into the cranks with loctite. Solid job and it never shifted.

I think I still have some spare inserts for the non drive side. If it’s something you’re interested in taking on, I can send you an insert. You’d have to drill and tap the crank arm then install the insert...

I have a BB30 compact crankset in black in 175mm in the attic if you want it. You may need am inner chainring...but I may have one. I think the outer ring is 52.
I may have fresh SKF bearings as well. I think they should fit. I bought them for my Noah but went the adaptor route to use a Campagnolo crankset.
Let me know if its any use to you!

Thanks a mil everyone for your suggestions. I've given my mate the options. He asked me to install the 105. So he's getting the adapter and crank. It'll look cooler with the full groupset anyway .... :)
