Golf MK7 battery state of charge

I tried to check the state of charge on my 152 golf today but it's just showing ---%. I press the trip button until it lights up (ignition off), then hold the trip button until battery appears. Any reason why it would be blank? The battery was replaced over a year ago, but done by VW so should be coded correctly.
