I think we passed the early adopters phase and we are in the pragmatics stage. I think the "chasm" according to this chart happened.

World Car of the Year 2022 dominated by EVs https://www.worldcarawards.com/web/2022_results.asp. Gone are the days when they would win only at the EV section.

It is unfortunate that the war happened and coupled with semi shortages on the top of the void left by the pandemic they reduce the production at so many levels. The demand is higher than ever and everywhere you turn they speak about EVs.

I'm curious how the lack of infrastructure affects switch for the ICE drivers. Or it is just an echo chamber. At the pub last weekend. "I'm driving electric but is no good. My dealer told me not to install a charger at home cause with my Range Rover it will take me 11 years to payback the cost". 😶 Too bad we're mostly focusing on the negatives. Too bad our pointy heads do nothing to educate and/or showcase.

I'm planning a long trip with some foreign visitors, some of them die hard petrol-heads. We'll se what they will think about EVs and the infrastructure after that. Only 29 minute charging on the road needed as the overnight stay at the hotel has destination charging. It is true that it could be even better by having charging facilities at the Cliffs but most likely I'd stop more often. Anyway the SuC mitigates any range anxiety in this case, and hopefully will see more and more locations even if they will be opened to non-Tesla.

@innrain If you're passing by Spanish Point I'd highly recommend stopping in to The Armada Hotel try their Catch seafood van (it's fantastic)

They've moved their chargers (previously 3 Tesla destination chargers (2 being Tesla only)) to a new 8 space EV area, though the latest report on PlugShare says only 2 chargers currently available, but still, if your passing... I'd even stop here now for some grub regardless if charging was available...

I saw this on SpeakEv , is it just someone paraphrasing what was said at the recent event or an actual Tesla document?

“We will be opening the network in phases in the UK, starting with the sites with the most capacity.

While it is unlikely that we would revoke 3rd party capabilities, we can delay site openings to 3rd parties until we can get additional sites online in the case of high utilisation risk

    6. Will you open up sites that are already suffering queuing?

UK Supercharger sites that are regularly beyond capacity will not be prioritised to open up to all EVs“

Well following the logic in that short Q&A all the Irish sites will be opened up, perhaps Tralee as an outsider as only two V2 stalls will remain "closed"

Pretty sure Sandyford would be busy considering that would be cheaper than the nearby 50kW ESB. :) Also space is at premium so any wrongly parked car wold take 50% of the capacity.

You make a point, some will be busier after opening to all for this reason

I can't see them ever opening a site like Sandyford...

Do we know of SuC's located at Sales/Service shops in Germany/France/Norway/Netherlands that were opened up?

    Shirly not.

..but if you were to go there you would only be waiting minutes and the stalls will be preset to 80% maximum charge (but can be overwrote in the car touchscreen), charging speeds along with penal overstay fees means you'd get a charging spot in no time

True... Unless they are open to everyone, and a Toyota bZ4X takes 4 hours to charge to 99% 🤦🏻

Toyota Tesla. It's an easy mistake to make. All joking aside can other manufacturers charge from the Tesla destination chargers now? Or were they always open to non Tesla owners.

Destination chargers can be configured to Tesla only or accept any car

White Tesla Destination Chargepoint is configured for any EV, Red is Tesla only. There is a dipswitch to allow non-Teslas but Red ones should never be "opened for all".

Update from the Raheen Woods Hotel Athenry on the Superchargers.

‘’’ESB have confirmed commissioning of their equipment by Wed 25th May, but frustratingly say they cannot provide full power to the site until later this year, due to upgrade works to their major substation for the area not being complete yet’’’

    absolutely typical of ESB.

~15 supercharger sites now open to non-Tesla across England / Scotland / Wales.

Flint Mountain supercharger in North Wales, handy to and from ferry, is included.

While this is good news for the general uptake of EV's, the best thing will be the butthurt and drinking in the tears of the tesla acolytes.

Surely they would have opened Ireland.... if they were indeed planning to open it alongside the U.K.?

The fact that they've opened 15 out of around 90 in the U.K. is telling. And given they only have 7 sites here, and soon to be 10, I still can't see them opening up here.... maybe if they had 20-30 sites.

Most of the opened up ones in the U.K. have a Tesla only SuC very close to it too.. I just don't see the numbers to allow it in Ireland without it becoming a sh1tshow.

Why? They are doing it on a phased basis so somebody has to be first and somebody last. Irish tesla fast chargers are not heavily used really so why wouldn't they, its obviously working well if the scheme is expanding as it is....much faster than people thought

Tesla opening new supercharger sites in Athenry, North Dublin & Sandyford this year, and in fairness they have at least 4 - 8 reliable & very fast stalls in each location so opening up shouldn't be a major problem as long as ICE drivers dont block them & people park properly. Also they'll be similar in price to Ionity unless you pay a subscription. Don't really see the problem, I only use them on a long journey, similar to other drivers who do most of their charging at home. This is a storm in a tea cup....

It depends on the location. Birdhill has always been busy when I've been there, opening that one up would be a shitshow. Ballacolla and Castlebellingham not so I'd imagine they'd be fine, haven't used any of the other sites in Ireland yet.

I would tend to agree and hope it doesnt become a big issue. Its more that certain non-Tesla vehicles will block adjacent chargers when parked due to their cars charging plug location, along with slow charging EVs are what Tesla owners are more concerned about.

The ESB chargers on the M1 always have a queue when I'm going by there during the day.

They will fill up those slots quickly.

    Don't forget :

Can I Supercharge if I am visiting the Netherlands, France, Norway, UK, Spain, Sweden, Belgium and Austria?

The Non-Tesla Supercharger pilot is currently limited to EV drivers who live in the following countries:

    • The Netherlands
    • France
    • Norway
    • Germany
    • UK
    • Spain
    • Sweden
    • Belgium
    • Austria

So non Tesla EV will not be able to use UK or France etc

Birdhill is a busy one and is regularly ICE'd. The summer months are particularly busy but I've been there on a midweek morning at 8 a.m and seen 2 other cars charging (only 6 chargers so you have to make sure to get one where you are not load sharing).

Wouldn't be great optics to find 2 non Tesla's taking up 4 spots out of a possible 6!!

Castlebellingham is ideal. 8 reliable high powered chargers which are clearly marked compared to the single 50kw ESB unit. Money to be made there.

    Did.

I believe it was a M3P, and it was swapped for a Taycan... so I doubt there's much envy beyond the charging network..
