What to do with the expensive car sitting on the drive?

A year ago I brought a Mitsubishi Outlander phev gx4h in from the uk, it hasn’t done much since.

It’s a 2016 with 79k miles on the clock, I’m considering shifting it on as I just have no need for it at the moment.

Would have to replace it with something, ideally something that can tow a bit and has 4wd but not absolutely essential. Spend maybe 8-10k on the replacement.

Just wondering what the best way of doing it would be? Trade down through a dealer? All private? Just looking for some input.

    Thanks

Quick and relatively easy - dealer.

Willing to spend time with it, and want more money at the end of it - private.

Is there much private sales going on during this lock down?

I had a car for sale this week, reasonably priced, good advert with everything covered, literally 1 call about it, thankfully they bought it but I get the feeling if they had not called, it would be still sitting here with the phone ringing.

Your car is probably worth about €14,500 - €15,000 at the moment?

I can’t see many dealers rushing to hand out cash if you trade down, without completely crucifying you in the deal. So you are probably looking at a private sale.

I was just talking with my mates about second hand cars, and I think I would be very reluctant to buy a second hand hybrid or electric vehicle privately just yet, as there would be no warranty and still not enough long term info for me regarding battery life.

IMO probably better off to hold onto it. the overall cost to change, if you put €10k into a replacement would be negligible over the life time of it.

Agree, if you keep it another few months it'll be the kind of car you buy with a 10k budget.

Edit, just looking online they are a bit dearer thsn i thought, dealer sales asking like €20k. I still think by the time you end up taking a hit selling it and buying something else you'll end up in a much ****ter car with only a little bit of cash to show for it.

We are twenty years with obtainable hybrid cars. How much longer do they need?!

Genuinely. Why ? To get 4 grand back ?

    Is it worth it.

Keep it. Probably cost you less than it's replacement.

They’re 18-22 grand on DD, so there’s quite a bit of money to be saved I feel. May even get something from the luxobarge thread for a while!

All in it cost me 17.5 grand last April.

They are asking prices from dealers not the selling price. You'll be lucky to get €18k on a private sale, most people spending that much want dealer back up, and a dealer will not offer a good deal if you are trading down.

The running costs for a luxobarge will be more than the PHEV, that's if you don't end up with a lemon.

16-18 would be more your speed for a private sale. Your not getting 20k for it, whatever done deal says. That's dealer money .

I'd consider what's the point in selling it. Your swap requirements seem to match the vehicle you already have .

I get that, but are many Indy mechanics investing in equipment to diagnose/ service them? There are some very knowledgable minds on here might know more about that than me, I’m just speaking from my own perspective, as someone looking to change in the near future.

Dealers have them on CarsIreland for €16k, for your model. I’m not knocking your car, but I’d expect to walk into a dealer with cash and get €1k at least off the asking price. Would have at least a three month warranty to find any issues with the car.

I'd throw up it for like 18950. You aren't obliged or committed to sell, no point selling, unless irs financially worwhile.

If you could get your money back after a full year of ownership that wouldn’t be bad going. With Brexit and dealers being closed now isn’t a bad time for private sellers all things considered. I wouldn’t bother downgrading if your going to loose money on your current car

On the flip side there will be a lot less imports coming from the UK now and your mileage isn’t likely to rise so the depreciation on your car shouldn’t be as harsh as previous years so holding onto your current car might not be as bad as you think

I totally understand why now with covid, with many cars just sitting there. Many wont want the cost of potentially large depreciation, mine would be long gone with the current situation, only depreciation if any is negligible...

There is the mindset here that once she hits over a 100k , it will explode. Yeah I'd just put her up and play it by ear...

What would the insurance implications be if I had no car at all for a year?
Would I lose my ncb entitlement I wonder?

I sold my car last September for similar reasons here. Insurance company told me my NCB would remain valid for 2 years.

Keep it. It does everything you need it to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Selling it for an 8 to 10k car is nuts. Either keep it or sell it and buy a 1500 quid car.
Trading in wont be an option as the deal would be so bad that it just wouldnt make sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,947 ✭✭✭Bogwoppit

I think I’ll put it up and if I get an offer I’m happy with I’ll sell it and we’ll just be a 1 car family for a while.
Yes it does everything I need, apart from the fact I don’t really need anything at the moment!

And at least you know what your driving now, you could be buying problems!

Isn't that car still under Mitsubishi manufacturers warranty?

Should give some reassurance to prospective buyers.

I'm by no means trying to be rude, but if you bought it for 17.5k last year, why would you expect anyone would pay more a year later?

For example, here's a similar model for 16k.

There are a couple of them around that price range, and I'm sure there's a little haggle room built in to all their prices. Although it seems if you've a nicer colour in it (red/black) it will sell for more.

If you wanted to swap it out quickly, you could just list it as the cheapest one on Donedeal, and at least you know it'd be gone sooner than later. Although if you're not in a hurry then of course that's not entirely necessary.

What are you considering as a replacement?

I've never driven an Outlander, but they're a lovely looking car. If I could get by with an electric car I'd be strongly tempted by one of them.
