    Hi Guys

I'm looking for a car for 6 months - 120km a day commute to Cavan. I don't want to spend a huge amount. Would this be reliable enough ? Many thanks for any advice

If you only want a car for 6 months buy a banger and you won't have to worry about loosing money if it turns out to be a lemon.

An 11 year old BMW wouldn't be the the most reliable car in the market. Especially pre 2011 320d model's as they are prone to timing chain issues. They are a beautiful car and somewhat fun to drive. If you are in the market for a reliable car these are wayyy down the list.

Why on earth would you buy that if its only for 6 months? You'll lose a fortune in value over that time when you go to sell it.
Buy something like an old 04-05 corolla for under a grand and you'll sell it for near enough the same amount after 6 months. And if its even half looked after itll give you no trouble.

Thanks guys. Clueless when it comes to cars. Unfortunately my previous car is unrepairable from an incident on black ice a few weeks ago. Thankfully only myself involved. I have a max budget of about 11k to spend. Will only be commuting for another 4-5 months then based near my home again from July.

For a 6 month car, use 1k and stick the other 10k in your savings.

Here you go, tax is a bit high but the bmw would have been the same. This is practical, low mileage, will be economical and should be reliable. Nct will cover the 6 months too.

I suppose the extra question here is whether you want to spend next to nothing or are more interested in comfort and style for your commute.
That Corolla is an eye sore but would likely do a job. This may not be what the op wants.

Thats fair enough, but he says he wants it for 6 months, so I can only assume he will sell it after that, unless he says otherwise. Therefore, something more expensive is likely to be a sure way to lose money, so a cheap, reliable car is good advice, but if hes hanging onto it after 6 months then perhaps not.

Thanks Guys. I’m not being very clear apologies. I may hang onto it longer than 6 months so might spend a bit more. In an ideal world I’d like to find something reliable and comfortable for 10k or slightly less that will last a few years. Thanks

OP have a look at this, cheap tax and long NCT. Nice spec too

The 1.9 Diesel in these tend to be very robust. Have a friend with the same one currently at 190k miles. This ones is only at 111k miles. Hes had it up for awhile so id say you could get it down to €3k ish.

Only issue with these is when it comes to selling they may not sell as fast as others cars ad there isn't much demand for them. But for that price its a lot of car and plenty of poke from the engine.

No resale in diesels - didn’t the EU make the obsolete or change the laws around using them in the near future.

OP - I drive an old but very reliable car. Fully NCT’d, no penalty points etc - could not get a different insurance quote last two years even overseas & big brokerage houses - too old and they win’t quite you. Worth checking if you can get & how much the insurance will be before you commit IMO. Also roadtax - neighbour bought a second hand lexus & then returned it within the cool off period - after she realised how eyewatering the tax was going to be pa.

The problem is that car will likely sell for half of what you pay for it now , if you do go to sell after six months... it's also a near write off if you develop timing chain issue...
