'15 Outlander - all brakes stuck on permanently

Wife brought the outlander (PHEV GX4H 2015) home today with smoke billowing out. Last 2 days it felt like something was binding as the engine was working harder than usual.

Let it all cool down, took it for a spin. After 600m I let it roll to a stop without braking, jumped out and burned my fingers off both front discs (rears were warm, but not as much). Brakes seem to be seized fully on.

2 days ago when i thought something was binding, I put it in neutral while driving and it seemed to roll along fine.

There was a bit of a squeel from brakes on full left lock and every now and again a little squeel that would go away with a touch of the brake pedal. It got new brakes all around a few months ago.

    Any ideas?

What exactly are new brakes all around? New Pads and Discs or were the calipers changed as well?
If the caliper guide pins are seized then the brakes will drag and cause heat which expands the pads and fluid causing them to lock on harder.
I would return to whoever fitted the brakes last time and get them to check it out.

Jack up front wheels and car in neutral spin by hand if they don't spin and need you to turn them, bring to garage and get them seen to it, ive had new pads be sticky due to the tabs that hold pad in carrier being a touch too fat, filed off a bit of the tabs on both sides on all 4 pads perfect afterwards.

Could be similar due to you having brakes recently.also as other poster said could be slide pins, maybe calipers also but unlikely on 6 y/o car.

While working on car Obviously make sure handbrake on and car is lifted properly etc dont ho under car only supported by jack.

It seems odd thats it all brakes at the same time? Usually sticking calipers/pad issues would leave the other wheels free to rotate? It kind of pointed me towards the master cylinder?

Outlander PHEV has regenerative braking doesn’t it?

The amount of pads and discs replaced on these is horrendous, seized brakes would show a red caliper and might be pads and discs again.Does this car use handbrake shoes internally or calipers and cables.
And as said jack up each wheel and check turning also pump the pedal and check again.Master cylinder issue should be 2 wheels.
Also check handbrake works on and off.

Will check now. Given it seemed to be just front brakes getting really hot, would that lead more towards a master cylinder?

In terms of regenerative braking, I was terrified of this initially. But given its the discs sticking, I presumed its a seperate issue? No idea how regen braking works.

Sorry yes, if brakes are smoking it wouldn’t tally with the regenerative braking, as that uses the electric motor.

I had similar in my own Outlander PHEV.
For myself it was a seized front caliper but the rest were fine.

For you it sounds like a central issue. Best let a professional check.

+ hazardous to drive boiling brake fluid and loss of brakes.

I'd be taking that to a main dealer to check out although it is most likely related to the recent new pads.

These were recalled previously for a rear brake problem BTW. Might be worth checking as well if this was done.

This is a bit off topic but with Mitsubishi pulling out of Europe where will recalls and warranty work be carried out when their dealerships close?

They will have to nominate someone to do the work on their behalf. Getting new parts from "dealer" may be an issue in future.

Aye even when asking for parts for a 30+ year old car were all DOOMED.

Mechanic trailering it away tomorrow. Given its both front brakes, I'm guessing master cylinder probs etc. Asked him to check over whole system. Not a problem I want happening again.

The worrying part is its very difficult to tell its happening until it starts smoking or smell it. Other that feeling the engine kicking in a little earlier than usual, its almost impossible to tell. Electric will just keep throwing power at the wheels and you won't know.

Strange if it were front calipers as they get plenty of use, collapsing flexy pipe, one way valve. If brakes are locking its easy to check as its much harder to push vehicle by hand.
