What's the situation if a dealer (or an individual) in the north brings a car in from Scotland, then puts this Scottish car on his forecourt (or driveway) for sale.

Is he liable to pay import duties?

And what happens is paddy travels up north and buys that car.

    Maybe, maybe not.

Was it a UK registered vehicle they bought in the North and could they prove it had been registered to a private individual prior to the 1/1/21?

They're still liable to pay VAT, just not the 10% customs charge.

I was getting my NCT done this morning and couldn't help but hear a robust discussion between someone paying VRT and the NCT employee.

Chap paying the VRT seemed to have done his homework and knew there was no import duty applicable if the car was coming from the north. NCT person was not aware and was saying it was applicable.

Customer was right, no import duty but it's just another case of total Brexit confusion.

Is the import duty payable at the time VRT is being paid? Surely its not up to an individual NCT employee to decide if duty is owed and their system is set up to determine whether it is and the cost of it???
