    Hi Folks,

Had this fail on NCT and can see parts are inexpensive and there are some good you tube guides to do this. My skills are basic, have done services, but is there anything I need to watch out for.
NCT failed with front ball joint (dust cover damaged/displaced, missing or severely deteriorated. Also has to repeat slip side test and the tester mentioned ball joint replacement should fix this.

    Thanks

    Reg?

    Edit:
    No need for reg.
That's the old wishbone going back to before noughties...

    Simple job.
5 mins per side once wheels are off.
    Use Lemforder parts

Just posting back after job done and NCT passed.

In theory easy job as it was on one side, so easy I did it twice as forgot the left/right side specific part !
Other side was a nightmare to remove but I learned a lot. On the lower part despite penetrating oil and breaker bars it took a while. One bolt snapped , another got rounded. Got rounded as took what I thought was a short cut and used an open spanner. What got it off in the end was a 6 sided socket hammered on and a breaker bar.
Then the top nut was a challenge as the spindle kept moving but a vice grips and spanner gor me done.

This is the video that guides on this model and procedure.

Apologies, I meant 5 mins if using impact sockets and Milwaukee Impact.
Snapping bolts don't matter - you're throwing away anyway.
(If reusing - e.g. CV joint, then you can drive old studs out and use bolt/nut)

The top nut is easily loosened provided all sh*t cleaned first.
Again, as replacing you can damage to separate without need for pro level separating tool (I don't mean 'fork type' :) )

They're so cheap you should renew both sides with quality items and then get 4 Wheel alignment done. The slip test that NCT use is not worth a **** - if it fails that then you shouldn't drive the car!

I watched that video, I find autodoc tutorials good but misleading in that very few people are changing parts on spotless cars with not a hint of rust on them. But a good how-to all the same. Glad you got sorted. I'd prefer your style ball joints over the ones that are a single unit with no added plate that you need to press out of the control arm with a tool

Cheers BlakeS94 for your input, it was a good learning exercise for a relative novice. I'd say if I had impact tools I'd have rounded the nuts quicker 😀 In terms of the video it helped with overall procedure but yep not a bit of rust and lots of loose grease leaking from the boot. Both side done and thanks for heads up on alignment.
