2002 VW Polo roof leak

    Hi,

I have a 2002 polo that is leaking water all over the place. I have just fixed the back lights that were letting in water resulting in the rear floor being soaked.

I have now discovered more water coming in via the passenger side roof liner. My only thought is that it must be coming in from a leak where the windscreen is sealed to the car. The seals around the door look to be fine.

The car is so old I was just going to use silicone around the whole windscreen to try and stop it.

Anyone else ever see this or have any thoughts on where it could be coming from..

*to note, the windscreen gets a lot of condensation over night however if this was the cause I would expect it to affect the whole roof and not just the passenger side, so I don't think its causing it*

I'd be thinking windscreen or if not around the frame of the door in the corner the rubber seal may have perished. Is there any sign of moss growth around the corner of the windscreen? Can you take photos of corner of windscreen?

The door frame seal looks fine however there is moss around the windscreen, probably more than this pic shows. You can also see condensation all along the windscreen.

Odly enough the other side of the windscreen looks identical but no water getting in there

I should probably powerwash all around the seals to clear any moss and dirt to see if it makes a difference, I just assumed it wouldn't

Yes it could be that the seal has perished given the age and water is sitting there and eventually getting through over time, looks like there's moss and other debris sitting in the gap. I wouldn't go powerwashing it as you will likely push more water in and perhaps make matters worse.

Get an old toothbrush and with small bits of soapy water rub down the gap between the window and the frame of the car until all the debris is cleared, this might be enough if the channels are cleared out that no water will sit here to eventually go inside the car. Permanent solution is probably to clear it out and carefully stick some black Tec7 around the gap, might not exactly look the tidiest but if you are careful it should be fine.

    Water leaks

A likely cause of water leaks on your VW are the sunroof drains, which are small rubber tubes on either side of the vehicle by the rearview mirrors. These drains often get clogged with debris and begin leaking water once they become too full. When experiencing issues with the sunroof drains, squeeze the tube to force the water and debris out, and then cut the end of the tube so that it is always open, preventing anything from becoming trapped inside.

Other causes of water leaks may include a clogged drain located under the battery, a clogged pollen filter, or debris trapped in the flange next to the windshield.

It doesn't have a sunroof, does the above still apply if it doesn't?

    An update on this.

Car doesn't have a sunroof so its nothing to do with sunroof raintraps.

The car had a leak out the back light for about 6 months, I fixed that and the back carpet had no dampness where's before they were soaked.

I pulled the headliner and found a soaking roof with condensation, in the mean time I seal the front window with Tec 7.

Dried out the condensation on the roof and in 5 days not a drop, so would appear this was condensation from when the floor was soaked and given the weather the last 4 months and the lack of driving the car does it simply never had a chance to dry and not a leak at all.

I decided to pull the headliner out of a car completely to get rid of the mould with vinegar and then I thought feck it I will give it a proper clean, so it's currently inside and the mother is not happy :D

Probably the cleanest headliner an 02 polo has in Ireland haha

Pic below is before it was cleaned.
