Hi Just wondering if anyone has their probation suspended in the cs and what was the outcome. Is increments affected if this happens ? Do increments be backdated?

Backdated increments? It’s a once a year increase. How many years have you missed getting it ? Surely if you are on probation you’re only new to the civil service !

I had two guys on probation remote working - have you actually been ‘working’ ie have you been able to work?

By increments I assume you mean you will get your increment from the date you started not the date your probation completed?

Heard a rumour that other cs departments just waivered probation. It will be 15mths for me to get permanent and an increase

Thats nonsense. If you are working from home, you're working regardless of location.

    Are you in the union?

I'd push it. Ask what their justification is. It's not your fault, you were available for work.

Then it’s not really your fault you can’t work - but In fairness your worried about an increment and you haven’t worked since March....

But you never said that. Anyways you didn’t work for three months - so a three month extension would be fair?

Maybe it would if I didn't hear probation was rubber-stamped in other departments during covid-19 plus can you use one rule for full time and one for those on probation?

So maybe put that forward in your case and ask the union for advice . You can’t be at a disadvantage to other people - if they weren’t working remote but passed their probation that’s unfair on you.

But in fairness I was also on probation during lockdown for a few months - I worked my ass off - it would be unfair to me if someone who did nothing for three months ( and had the summer off!) passed probation while not being able to prove themselves. I also had two staff memebers on probation who worked everyday

    Two sides to every coin.

Yes there is always two sides to a coin but I didn't say to them I wanted to stay at home that was their policy I was always available to work those days so would it not be down to bad management ?

I suppose you could argue that - in fairness your manager should have been in touch and making sure you had work you could do.

Look there is no harm in asking - all they can say is no!

It hard to know what to do it only a small office and only in the door as they say. I am just thinking about even mobility, career break etc all pushed out further if I wanted to use them. Plus now it looking like 15mths to get full time and lose three months increment even if it only a small amount

Struggling to see how you can make a good case here. As for other departments simply waiving probation, that's just incompetence.

Staff who go on maternity leave have their probation frozen and rightly so. The point of probation is to judge someone work performance. Can't do that if they aren't working.

I am not disputing what probation does it's they way it was handled that is the problem

Civil Service HR Policy made allowance for orgs to pause the probation process in their Covid-19 guidelines, I'm afraid. However, they were encouraged to continue it if they could (I'm guessing this means where the officers continued working in the same role without much of a break).

If you'd like a more comprehensive explanation, I'd recommend contacting your HR - it should have gone through them for approval.

I haven't seen or heard of anyone having their probation waived, and it's definitely not officially allowed. But, saying that, all probation processes in my org continued despite Covid - we're all working remotely, so it makes sense here (NSSO in Dublin).

I was a co in justice until recently and I was working both remotely and in the office since the pandemic started, as was everynone else in the office.

The union told me some departments were grand and others not I was just posting here to see if it happened to others and outcomes rather than trying the union and causing trouble when it only a small office I am in . The service was able to supply equipment to assist with working from home for some. Like I said in previous messages I didn't cause covid-19 but getting penalised for things out of my control.

Unless they've specified that your increment day will change as a result of your extended probation I would not expect that to be affected. Write to them requesting clarification.

Extending probation sounds legitimate in the circumstances you describe. Unless you're about to buy a house and urgently need permanent status id go with it.

At this point if you're doing OK the extra 3 months mean little. If there are struggles on your record then they either guillotine it now or you have 3 extra months to redeem yourself.

What may happen or not in other depts or what youve heard are totally irrelevant tbh

In the circumstances your management and hr wont have any trouble justifying a delay if they so wish

Ask yr hr what the situation is, thats the height of it
