Unlocking a mobile when no longer having sim card

Got a 3 phone some years back. Misplaced the sim and got a new number. Fast forward a year and wishing to change network. To get the unlock code, the old number needs to be texted. What does one need to do to get phone unlocked?

What does one need to do to get phone unlocked?

Buy the unlock code on eBay
