If to choose between these two cars. Which would be the better buy?

Performance, power overall reliability and the most efficient of the two.

Thinking of buying soon and looking at these two cars. Had a vrs before and found it to tick most boxes.

    Thanks

The v90 would be in another league in terms of comfort.

An Octavia is a great all rounder and a vRS even more so but the Volvo is just going to be a more enjoyable car to own from a luxury point of view.

What year are you thinking of?
I've a 2017 v90 Cross Country with d4 engine, 190 hp (mine has the polestar upgrade which increases hp by 10 and torque by 40 and makes a night and day difference). The interior quality and comfort is amazing and way ahead of a Skoda imho. D4 engine is reasonably fuel efficient, I'm getting 7.1l/100km over 8000km since I got it.
Boot is ok but not massive.

The v90 is about 2 segments above the Octavia so you cannot make a fair comparison between one and the other.

Hoping to upgrade to 2020 volvo v90 from 2016 vrs. Just want to try something new and different. I know nothing about the v90 but saw one and they look a fine car and something I think I would like.

Is it a bigger car in size of boot capacity than the vrs. That would be another important factor i guess for me personally.

Any issues i need to watch out before considering a v90?

Not 100% sure but I'd guess the boot on the v90 is a little smaller, its around 560 or so.
A 2020 v90 is going to cost way more than a 2020 octavia vrs.
I'd recommend the Cross Country, its more expensive but the extra ground clearance is very practical and makes the car look far better imo. It also has awd which is a nice to have.
It is fantastic for long motorway drives and suprisingly easy to drive in town considering how big it is. Has a very good turning circle and light steering.
I'd recommend the pan roof as an option, it makes a huge difference.

The d4 engine is a bit agricultural imo and lets the car down a bit. The polestar engineered engine upgrade costs about 600-700euro but is a must have and transforms the car.

There will be a substantial difference in servicing and maintenance costs between an Octavia and V90.

Would you prefer the D5 over the D4 version of the V90?

I wish I'd gone for it, but only if its less agricultural than the d4, which it might well be as it has Volvo's power pulse system.

Can you switch off this option or is build into the system?

Another V90 D4 Polestar owner and ex Superb/ Octavia driver. It feels more powerful than a TDI VRS overtaking in Polestar mode but its not designed for rallying around corners like the Skoda. The car overall is leagues ahead in all other ways - quality of the ride, fit and finish and the amount of equipment as standard etc. Savage car in bad weather feels so solid. Economy on mine is more like 6.3 / 6.4 average mixed driving, but I guess a lot of that is down to it being FWD rather than AWD

Not really - my previous Skoda's had to be serviced at 15k km where as the Volvo is 30k km so although each service is dearer overall costs seems about the same.

Long term repair costs will be higher on the Volvo but OP is buying a 2020 so will have 2 years warranty+

Don't Skodas like VWs have the option of long life servicing too?

Yes, and the 30k long life service costs the exact same as the 15k suckers version.

Having had owned or had use of approx 10 Skoda's and Seat's all of them had to be serviced at 15k km. Indeed I had a service pack on two of them and that called for 15k km. services

It kicks in when needed so theres no need to turn it on or off.

Is it fair to ask how many kms should you get out of the tyres with awd system?
