Question on finding out if a car is a UK import

    Hi,
    Just a thought to see if a car is a UK import, and wondering if my thought process is correct of flawed;

    First off, go here; https://www.cso.ie/en/statistics/transport/archive/

Pick your year, and then click on the link that says "Vehicles Licensed for the First Time" with only the year at the end, not the month. You may need to goto a later year to see this.

    For example. 2007; https://www.cso.ie/en/media/csoie/releasespublications/documents/transport/2007/vehlica_2007.pdf

Page 3 has the new vehicles by county. My understanding would be that this amount of cars in, for example, Cavan in 2007 was 3465

Would I be then correct that any 2nd hand car imported into Cavan would have a reg plate higher than 07 CN 3465 ?

What’s wrong with just typing the registration into motorcheck.ie ?

what difference does it make? a 2007 car is 13 years old and likely to have been in Ireland for 10 years.

the speedo in m or km is a pretty basic check for most cars (after the Irish km chanhe)

The figure 3465 refers to the number of vehicles registered - not the number of cars registered.

The figure 3465 refers to the number of vehicles registered - not the number of cars registered.

Also, they started at 07CN201 and not 07CN1 so not quite that many.

It would be a way of knowing if something was imported after the year finished. There’s nothing to say that something wasn’t imported during the year.

I’d be able to spot an import a mile away due to a high Reg plate, Limerick could be anything over 4000 in the first half and over 16/1700 in the second half, Dublin usually 25/26k plus in the first half and 20k plus in the second half.

It’s a quick way to judge, but it’s no guarantee if it’s a low Reg that it hasn’t been imported.

Why would it matter unless you are specifically looking for a UK car, they are usually higher-spec and better cared for and would have lived on superior roads compared to Ireland.

Really? Don't all counties start at 1? Never knew that. I wonder why?

can't see too many buying a non-transferable number for that price unless it was xxCN 1

It's way more than that - 40k in the first half or possible more. In the old system the Dublin numbers used to reach over 100,000. I registered a new vehicle at the end of December 2000 and my number was 00D 102,xxx.

Sorry you’re right, i was thinking up to 31st March, not the half.

I’m fairly sure that starting at 200 thing is gone the last few years, Limerick and Clare and Tipp definitely don’t have it anyway.

They do these days, but back then they started at 201.

Only exceptions are where there is a mayoral car, which gets number 1. In some cases number 1 is reserved on the xx2 year prefix as well as xx1

I think it changed in 2013
