Arthritis in Feed and working in healthcare

I was diagnosed by Xray with mild arthritis in my left foot last March. By the time I got to the Consultant with my MRI, he said I had advanced arthritis in my mid foot. I didn't really notice the pain then, except occasionally, but from mid November, the pain has been increasing, and now I am limping, even with painkillers he has given me, and anti-inflammatory gel. I am due to go for corticosteroid injections on 4th Jan. Has anyone had them here and do they work? I'm worried about my job as I work in healthcare and shift work and I have two children in college. My colleagues have noticed I am limping and have commented on it. I would like to continue working. I like my job but am on my feet all day. The Consultant talked about mid-foot fusion surgery, but apparently I will still be left with stiffness, though not pain, and I will need about 6 months off work. I loved walking, but he has told me to limit this, and do non weight bearing sport - I go to the gym, swim, and have an exercise bike. If anyone has had arthritis in their feet, I would really welcome some advise. I don't want to be disabled at 53!
