You're buying the fuel anyway, the giveaway is to encourage loyalty. No different than loyalty cards in shops. Tesco clubcard, SuperValu real rewards.

I remember those soup bowls with recipes on them, bowls of pâté and some sort of glasses (maybe wine glasses). The parents would choose where to fuel up based on the gifts.

Edit: image in OP had loaded now. Those are the bowls I was on about. The in laws still have a full set.

my parents are still drinking out of glasses they got from Esso back in the day (think they have a few of those bowls as well).

Most of my teenage record collection (cassettes actually) was accumulated via the Esso Tiger Tokens / Golden Discs vouchers.

They have been giving coffee/tea/chocolate/pastries etc for ages, what's the difference with giving something else in a promotion? You don't have to collect the tokens if you don't want to

Just like circle k came out with the plus fuel, followed by Applegreen, and then maxol.

I presume they'll all follow suit with these free gifts

If it works the same as their scratch and win scam I'll have to drive 30km to an actual Circle K station that gives out the prizes rather than the 5 not real Circle Ks just called circle k between here and their "real" Circle K. (If that doesn't make sense to you that's because the 17 year old in my local station explained it and agreed it didn't make sense)

Couldn't be arsed for a free €1 bottle.

I mainly remember the whitish coloured plates, bowls and cups and saucers with the animals on them, there was still a bowl with a squirrel around the place till recently, and a couple of plate with maybe a rabbit and a hedgehog, can't actually remember.

An express site on my travels, doesn't participate in the scratch game, but has gotten these bottles in stock.

So I'd imagine that a lot more locations will have h this offer.

I always wondered did anyone save up for a Fiat Bambino with the green Shield Stamps?

You needed something like four hundred and thirty seven thousand books, or thereabouts.

All we got were sheets and pillow cases.

The 'free' gifts were a pain in the hole for pump attendants like myself at the time Annoying customers always trying to get more that they were entitled to. They'd buy £3 of petrol and expect a full dinner set. "But I'm in here every second day" Blah, blah, blah.

In the early 70's when you could still get outdoor rooftop viewing access at Dublin Airport, one of the petrol station tokens (I think Esso Tiger) used to operate the access turnstile gate that allowed you on to the roof gallery so you could hang off the edge of the building and wave to your departing relatives.

Health and safety (and security) wouldn't let you do that now... the noise up there was deafening (literally).

Worked for shell years ago in one of their distribution warehouses. Half of one side of the warehouse was full of stuff they either didn't get rid of in promotions or stuff they got in for promotions that didn't happen. They had a heap of bikes sitting there that had been for a promo in the late 90s

Still have these from shell, from 20 years ago or so, never even opened any of them.

The parent's car did maybe 10,000 miles/annum when I was growing up ....... I used to look at the Tiger miles catalogue realising we'd never have the tokens for anything really.

Circle K aren't too bad now with their play or park thing and the various app promotions where no purchase is necessary ....... "free" stuff is always nice but I don't tend to buy my diesel in a Circle K as I usually pass somewhere that's much cheaper for most fill ups.

If you work the system you can get 8¢ off a L in circle k

4c off with AA app , and then pay with a fuel card and get another 4¢ off.

It was a page full. There were 3 or 4 already filled in. I remember claiming a gift in Texaco House (Ballsbridge) and there was someone before us will a page of joined stamps stuck to the page. Texaco did not want to give the gift as they though the stamps may have been stolen.

Still have come Green Shield stamps...

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Very different times, thanks for the reminder. I remember my parents being mildly obsessed with buying fuel in certain stations for stamps. We might have come close to running out of fuel at times trying to make it to a particular station so I could get a calculator watch or some other tat.

Another one was matchbox/corgi cars in boxes of teabags, I think the bags were PG Tips, a brand that would not have been bought in our house but for my pestering. Also only a minority of boxes had the cars, most just had tokens?

The biggest promotion that I remember though from the late 80s/early 90s was getting an Apple Mac computer if you collected lids from washing up liquid bottles and some other items (think they were all from Procter and Gamble products) The quantities required were such that it needed a large number of people collecting. My school did this and if I recall there was a lot of excitement about it

I have a teddy bear from jet oil would be over 35 years ago .
You would get a token for every 5 pound of petrol bought.

I dont quite get giving out Free reusable bottles when they have no place in any store to refill the bottles with drinking water while travelling? Be better spending the money installing water dispensers for people to use. Bit of jumping on the green wagon me thinks.

There is a difference. Loyalty cards are just a gimmick to gather data on your buying habits. That's why I never sign up for them.

'Free' gifts, when I'm buying the fuel anyway is a different matter (although I'd never chose a filing station based on 'free' tat). I buy my petrol in my local family owned premises (unless I run low when far from home).
