02 Corolla - engine "shaking"

    Hi all,

I was driving yesterday when the engine started to splutter and shake. I thought the engine was going to cut out. The engine light came on.

I had a look at the engine this morning and the belt is fine. The gearbox has been shagged for the last three years but I've been able to work around it. I'm not sure if this is the cause of it.

It passed the NCT in October and I was hoping to get the year out of it before I upgraded. I don't want to put too much money into the car again!
Would anyone know what it the problem could be?

    Thanks in advance.

If you can get a cheap code reader it will tell you what the fault is. We could be guessing here all day what the fault is but code reader will tell you the issue

Coil pack gone, I'd say, especially if the car's power is reduced.

If that's what it is the fix should be under €100.

If EML is flashing (especially when accelerating) it's more than likely a coil. Any code reader will tell you which one. Spare coils widely available from breakers, 10-20 notes. 10mm spanner is all you need to replace it.

Do not drive it too much until it's all sorted, misfiring engine will damage catalytic converter very quickly.

Buy a set of spark plugs at the same time, more than likely your plugs are worn and the extra gap has caused the coil/s to over heat and fail.

Also the engine mounts used to wear on them causing a shudder but as your eml is on it’s more than likely with the firing or timing .

It turned out to be the ignition coil that had to be replaced.

That's good, the wallet won't be too upset.
