So where was this domination Wales were going to have upfront?

Great result. Love watching that team play, loads of talent coming through the ranks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Jaysus! That was a performance. Was not expecting that! Some serious talent on display. Moxham really looks lively, bar the brainfart. Sheridan is monstrous. Serious engine on him. I can't see the provinces not taking these lads into the academies. Everyone of these boys looks the business.
What's the thoughts on Loughnane? I know he was behind Stewart and Barron. I think he has a future!

  • Really impressive stuff. U20s generally my favourite comp to watch by a good bit, standard can be fairly high but they also haven't been coached to death yet.

Kendellen is very impressive but it's hard to make a pro comparison for him at 6 or 8. Similar to Hodnett and O'Donoghue who both excelled at 20s at 8 but their future at pro level seems to lie at 7. Will be hard to accommodate them all. Pom wasn't too dissimilar either but his lineout work allowed him to be an excellent no.6. Jack O'Sullivan iirc from a few years ago was arguably the most impressive at 20s level but is another one of those tweener players.

Really enjoyable performance that, big step up from last week. As a team they played with more pace and urgency, and they looked like they knew where they were supposed to be. Think every player can go over that game and say 'yep I did really well there.'

Forwards did well, the welsh were bigger and were targeting us a ruck time. Will be interesting to see what Boyle is like as a ball carrier next year. We see to prefer other carriers this year but he's had a couple of nice runs. Kendellen and Soroka played to their reputations. Sheridan is a grafter, really interesting from an ulster perspective. He may not have thse top two inches to be elite and I don't think he has the body for a second row at the next level, but he's a tough player and plays above his weight. Just what we need really.

Backs ticked along nicely and played with purpose. Forde played well - did I read he plays 10 as well? Which is his best position? Osbourne went really well again, I hope Leinster are aiming for him to be a 15 long-term. I know squad needs might force him elsewhere but he looks so natural there. Cosgrave played ok and Moxham looks a great athlete - he hits very hard and he's deceptively quick. Brain-fart aside he played well. Wasn't sold on Doak before but that was the sort of game that made others rave about him.

Forde does play 10 as well. Ive mainly seen him play 10 and he's very good there. Hard to know where he's better though.

It really was. I've become a but worn out by professional rugby lately, but this performance by Ireland was great for the soul.

I think we will be watching a lot of that side in the years to come.

Typically, what percentage of underage teams end up in senior rugby? Maybe there aren't stats. Just wondering.

Doak looks the real deal. Outstanding performance.

Great performance, won the collisions against for what you could see was a bigger Welsh pack. Moxham and Osbourne look scarily good as its rare that Irish rugby produce those big fast athletic backs on a regular basis, having 2 at the same time is a bonus.
No way Jack Boyle is 106kg as listed more likely 112kg. Will Soroka stick as a loosehead lock or Leinster decide to stick him at blindside?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

Doak is Ruan Pienaar with gas.

And there's not a damn thing Nucifora can do to stop him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

It's funny, we bench Illo and start Donnelly. Donnelly was excellent, scrummaged really well. I would assume that he's going into the academy. Byrne was also very good. He's got the size and he looks athletic. I think he will see action against England. Doak is quality. Ulster should send him down the turnpike to Dublin, immediately!
Soroka looks at home in the 2nd row. We truly do have some serious talent atm.

Senior pro rugby? High enough percentage but while most end up with provinces a fair few will end up playing in prod2/championship

    Should be real good

Is the Ire v Eng game being broadcast live, I checked RTE and it's not listed on the EPG for Thur?

    Heartening performance to watch.

Clicked much more than last week which was to be expected. Much more cohesive in the backline.

Loving this defensive pride the team clearly has. It will stand to them against England. The last few years England underage have been a bunch of bully boys who try bowl over opposition with size alone. Ireland have come extremely well coached and dominated despite being considerably smaller. Hoping to see a continuation of this trend.

    Technique >>> Size every time

Nathan Doak has to be the most talented back we've seen at underage level in some time? He's standing out like James Ryan, Baird, Hodnett all have done recently.

His passing technique is simply flawless. Didn't see a single one that the runner had to check themselves for. Lovely effortless style about it. And crucially, it's off the base and there was no discernable difference off either hand. A refreshing rarity to see especially at this level.

I hate his place kicking technique though. Seems to chip at it and doesn't get the best connection. Didn't make the posts on a conversion out wide. But that's a real nitpicking point lol.

Surely starts next season as Ulsters second choice 9.

I think rte is showing them all but they're all live streamed on the u 20 six nations website.

England been more than bully boys to be fair. Yes very much were that a good few years ago but when they started winning JWC they were playing far more than just bully boys
Totally agree about technique over size...

As good as Doak was, he has only played one game. This is a bit hyperbolic. It was a very exciting performance from him, I don't quite remember seeing an Irish 9 as well rounded before.

A small bit hyperbolic I'll admit.

But he's a few senior caps for Ulster already and given their second choice next season is likely Shanahan I'm pretty sure he can jump him on the ladder with passing ability

England in this 6N have been to be fair, especially against Scotland where it was a carbon copy of what an Eddie Jones England team have done the last year or so. Just get a pen, kick to touch and maul, kick down field for a pressure on Scotland and get a turn over. This England team while tough as nails as you’d expect do see to have the same limited gameplan as the previous England u20 side , I personally thought they were easy enough on the eye in 2019 though but that was an exception, but they do have some individuals who can cause problems in the backline particularly the two Orlando’s (not sure if they are related), their scrum half and actually Stuart’s son Dan Lancaster is a very smart player, can definitely see that he has a rugby brain like Stuart for a father.

From what I’ve seen from the two teams I would make Ireland favorites for the match as even at Ireland’s worst they battled through quite admirably whereas England have shown a soft underbelly at times particularly in the opening half of the France game

I'm concerned about this match. England dominated Scotland. I thought Scotland gave us all we could handle. But, we appear to be very fit and well coached. I like that Murphy rotated the side for the Welsh match, managing the workload over a short period makes sense.
While Doak was sensational, I think Corkery was very good also. He looked very composed and he has a good turn of pace.
Jack Boyle is a freak at 18 yes old. What a prospect. The front row looked good and well drilled and were all outstanding. Donnelly played well and Loughnane also! It's hard to believe that Stewart is out as is Barron and Loughnane is performing really well.
Really like Sheridan also. He is thought off as a blindside, but he doesn't look out of place in the 2nd row.
A lot of talent amongst this crop. Hopefully they continue to win!

Bar the try and 5 minutes in the 2nd half never looked like scoring a try against Ireland, It was a more dominant performance than England’s v Scotland.

It’s a really strong squad, it feels you could trust anyone to play and they would do a job.

I think Irelands defence could win it for us. Usually at this age-grade defences are all over the place, we look so well drilled in this area. Plus our midfield looks so strong; Kendellan, Doak, Corkery, Forde can do everything and look so composed. I'm surprised by how physical Corkery and Forde are considering they are both natural tens.

That pitch will be putting a lot of wear and tear on the bodies, they will need a bigger rotation of players after England to get everyone some good gametime, subs should have been on earlier in the Wales game.
Why couldn't they play on grass its June not January!
Doak is a talent for sure but he took too much on himself early in the game and it killed the flow for the team, got on the wrong side of the ref early doors arguing for calls Kendellen calmed him down, was his first start tbf so out to impress for sure but the English lads will be lining him up if he takes that much ball into contact and it won't end well.
Cosgrave is a good kicker? Corkery decent too we need our place kicking to be on point against England.
Really enjoyable watching the lads play they have really bonded as a team, great energy lots of chat on D, England lets be having ye!

They definitely said this on the broadcast last weekend but now it’s just on the player.

Seems a bit silly not to show the biggest game of the championship when you showed the first two. Especially when a home improvement show and father ted is what is on RTÉ 2.

I assume its ease of access. all sides can train there as well.
So no need to have teams using multiple venues to train as well
