Selling Irish car in UK (car is already in the UK)

So this car was originally a UK import and was imported into Ireland by the previous owner over 10 years ago. I've owned the car since 2012.

The car has been in the UK for a while now, I was looking to get some work done on it, but my circumstances changed and I'm looking to sell it. A friend was keeping it for me over in the UK.

It still has Irish plates and I have someone in the UK that wants to buy it. Does the fact it was a UK car originally make it easier to get it back on UK plates?

In terms of selling it, do I just get the VLC signed by the UK buyer and send to Shannon? Is it as simple as that, or do I need to do anything else?

Very hard to find information on this scenario, so would appreciate the advice.

Thanks for that, but I thought this was the process for getting a VRT refund?

This would involve me bringing the car back from the UK and then back to the UK to sell. That would cost me a lot of money for steps which I think are not needed.

I'm not looking for a VRT refund as the car is quite old at this stage. I just want to sell the car in the UK and change the ownership to the new owner.

It tells you what you need to do to export the car.

You cannot change ownership of an Irish registered car to a non Irish resident. You will need to give the new owner the Irish logbook with the car as they will need this when re-registering the car in the UK. Being honest I would not get involved in anything else other than giving them the logbook with the car, it's up to them then as the buyer to get the car re-registered over there. I would suggest they contact the DVLA on what is the procedure for that.

Have a read of this thread for more info:

    Cheers Bazz, that helps.

I can certainly do that. Good thing I asked as I was gonna send the VLC off to Shannon.

What happens to the records in Ireland that show I'm the owner of the Irish registration? How will this get updated?

I'm not sure but I'd say give the crowd in Shannon a ring. They might note it on their system that's it's permanently exported or point you to some form to fill in to make it official.

Actually I just saw this on the motortax.ie website:

You must tell your local Motor Tax Office, or this office, that the vehicle is being permanently exported to a given export destination (country).

Where the ownership of the vehicle is being changed to a person outside the jurisdiction of the State, you must send us a copy of the Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC) with the buyers name and address details also included.

You must give the original VRC to the buyer of the vehicle either in Ireland or abroad. We will help the authorities in the exporting destination with any queries they may have. The vehicle will only be recorded as exported on the computer record once we have received confirmation from the country of export that the vehicle is registered in that country.

    No. Not at all.
It tells you what you need to do to get VRT refund upon exporting the car.
OP is not looking for doing that.

In post above OP found the correct procedure anyway.

In relation to that, over last 5 years I exported 4 cars.
I reclaimed VRT back on two of them.
I never informed shannon or motortax office about export.
In case of two of those cars, currently on NCT website they show up as unavailable. One was exported with VRT refund, one without. Not long ago one of those cars were showing on NCT website as scrapped. So I assume they have a bit of mess in there....

On the other hand other two vehicles still show on the system here and i.e. NCT website shows their NCT last expiry, and allows me to book appointment.

All 4 care were registered abroad (within EU) so I assume Irish authorities must have been informed about that fact.
