This plant was doing well up until about 2 months ago, then started going down hill

Hard to make out on the photo, but are those specks on it discolouration or some sort of pest?
If the later you could try spraying the leaves with diluted washing up liqued every few days.

Most likely overwatered and possibly intermittently too dry.

Try lifting it out of the pot and looking at the roots. If they are dark brown/black they are dead. If you want to try and rescue it, cut off dead roots and try and see if there are any healthy looking ones - light coloured, white/green firm.

Also cut off discoloured and damaged leaves, look to see if there is any sign of new growth in the centre of the plant.

Repot with new compost - you can reuse that pot if you have cut off dead roots. If you have to cut off more than, say, half the roots its probably not going to survive.

It needs to be kept moist but not wet, do not water until the top of the pot is drying out, but don't leave it till the compost is shrinking away from the pot and it feels light. Don't leave it standing in water for more than an hour - water freely, then pour off any surplus after it has had time to absorb what it can take.

Tbh I would think it is past help, treat yourself to a new one and try a different watering regime.
