Friend just got the logbook for his tractor. Used in a private yard only (will never see the road).

Does he have to declare it off the road for tax? (it was previously taxed, has a reg etc.) - Just don't want him getting letters etc down the line.

he won't get any letter, but if ever it was to go back on the road, he could change the owner to get rid of possible arrears.

It 100% won't be on the road. I just wanted to check on his behalf to see if it needs to be declared off the road.

If it ever did go back on the road, it'll be under a different owner.

So, he doesn't need to take any action?

Might be no harm officially declaring it off the road anyway (Form RF150) as it is a second hand purchase and might save getting notifications/reminders etc.
Part C only when making a declaration of non-use immediately following the purchase of a second-hand vehicle.
The period of non-use must commence in the month in which the transfer of vehicle ownership took place.
The declaration must be completed and furnished within 21 days of the date of sale given on the Notification of
Transfer of Vehicle Ownership – this will be checked against the information on the Notification submitted to the
National Vehicle and Driver File by the seller of the vehicle.

Ya. Why not declare it off. He wont have that option again without paying tax.
I know there is no issue with not doing it in this case but as its possible, i would.

    Thanks all.

I notice on the RF150 you must provide an end date of being off the road... this thing is going to be off the road for as long as he owns it... any ideas there?

The OR declaration has to be renewed annually.

You can do it online and there is no charge.

Its literally 30 seconds once a year to keep it declared off.
You can also put it back on at any time by taxing it regardless of being declared off for a full year.

Declare an end date of 2099 perhaps?

As I understand you can only declare a vehicle of the road for a maximum of one year at any one time - this used to be the case anyway.

As above. You can only declare it SORD for the maximum amount of time that you can Tax it.
Even the online SORD system seems to be a rework of the actual Tax process.

Tales less time to bin the reminder letter/email that it's not taxed, instead of having to schedule a time every year for the foreseeable future to declare it off the road, and you can transfer ownership to get it back on the road at any time.
