Hi I just got the price for my vrt today and the price of it is really high and it works out that the omsp for the car works out to be about 39000 and I was wondering does anyone know if there’s anyway I can contact the revenue to see how the came up with a vrt price of nearly 6 grand

Im no expert on this, but a friend of mine had a similiar issue with a vehicle he imported from UK. Revenue were over valuing it and charging him to much VRT. He appealed it with them, by going through their appeals process, and they met him half way by making a considerable reduction. So they do have some sort of appeals process, also I understand you can send them a specific question regarding VRT on the ROS or mygov.ie systems, if I remember correctly.

    Good luck with it.

Afaik the appeals process only works after you pay the initial high VRT. In order to be successful you will need to provide proof that their OMSP is too high. You will need to provide them links to dealer adverts (not private sellers) here offering a very similar type car for less than what they think it's worth. VRT appeals are highly successful as long as you can provide proof.

Guy here with an Audi a6 got a huge quote and a silly omsp but successfully appealed. The thread isn't that old it might give you an idea of what's involved.
What car is it that you imported and what year?

Hi, what year is the car in question?

Unfortunately you need to engage with the above after paying up.

I got a good chunk back on my Audi a6 as above.

Hi, what year is the car in question?

    It’s a 1999 Mitsubishi evo 6

Just to be clear, did they put an original OMSP and a depreciated OMSP on it?

Emissions on that are over 225 I think which puts it into 36% VRT

Assuming you were quoted €5750, €600 of that would have been nox charge?

So €5150 approx for VRT plus €600 nox?

So didn’t they value your car at around €14300 and not €39000?

Im just after finishing the appeals process for my M3 and got some money back. Heres what I learned from my battle:
    - keep it simple. Present 3+ examples of the same/similar model/spec car for sale here in Ireland. Dont over complicate or exagerate, just present the facts of other cars with a lower OMSP.

    - present that the quoted prices online are not the price sold and that the real sale price is normally 10% less.

Pm me if you have more questions

You have to pay the higher amount first, then lodge an appeal.

You will need plenty of paperwork, and plenty of patience.
Don't be expecting the appeal decision in a hurry.

That said, I do know people who have successfully appealed, and got refunded the difference.

I've been working in Dublin for about 4 years now, originally from the North and still have address up there. I am looking to VRT my car, people have told me that you can get 1 free VRT, is this the case? If so how would I go about it?

Check out citizensinfo. They have a pretty good explanation about residency requirements etc.
My gut feeling is you don’t qualify as you’re not in the middle of doing a permanent transfer of residence.

Thank-you was thinking that, I looked at residence transfer and it seemed that you needed UK payslips / bank statements from the past 6 months to prove that you are currently moving, not sure could be wrong.

    That’s exactly it.

This is correct and I have recently done this for a motorbike. The application to attend the VTR appointment is quick and easy. The application to have the fee waived due to transfer of residence is extremely onerous. Huge amount of evidence is required to prove that you have just moved to Ireland and that you have taxed, insured and maintained the vehicle up until your recent move in the original country and that you were living, working and paying bills there too. It took me a whole day to gather the evidence.

Someone living in Ireland for four years even with an address outside Ireland would be unlikely to qualify because it would not be possible to gather all the evidence.

You have to apply within a year of relocating and the car has to be registered within 28 days of entering the state. They turn a blind eye to a slight lapse on the 28 days but I doubt they would bend to four years.

Once you have the VRT sorted on the car and you are waiting for an NCT, are you allowed to drive the car?

Technically no but everyone does anyway
