When to buy used?

    Hi,

Had been looking at bringing in a car from UK circa 2016/17 but really have found that the saving of 1k + isn’t really worth it so have been looking here instead and keeping my budget a bit lower.

Am looking at A4 2015 now with moderate mileage less than 80k.

Question is would I be mad to buy now or would waiting till Jan/Feb be a lot more sensible considering car year. Like would a 2015 car be cheaper in Jan/Feb than now.

I’m in no particular rush to buy but if I could save a few hundred I’d wait.

    Thanks

You might save something small but if you see a decent deal and you wait you might be stuck looking for a while.

Yeah kind of agree. But I'm sure garages would want to deal before the year changes. I suppose they figure that into prices now maybe.

I mean a plate that's 1 year older will be less attractive for a buyer. Trying to get into a dealers head here.

I could wait till Jan myself if I thought that there were a few more options on a cheaper car ie 2015 cars now should be a little cheaper in 2021.

Do you not think that the year change would be fairly significant for prices.

In January UK cars will be more expensive, import duty and possibly VAT, so Irish cars will most likely increase in price as people will still need to buy 2nd hand cars but the UK option will not be available.

There's plenty of motor heads on boards who will be along to advise you, shortly......but my tuppence worth is to take your time, do your research, and don't be too prescriptive on make/model either. For example Audi A4 comes with a few different specs/engines also remember Audi A4 shares most of its engines /mechanicals with some other far cheaper VAG make/models.

    Thanks all for the input.

As has been said I'm not in a hurry so will bide my time on selecting.

Service history will be paramount tho in selecting and would like to get a car with reasonable mileage too.

OK. Had been looking at the A4s Diesel and have seen some good prices on 2014 2l models.

Theres a 1.8 petrol model 2014 about a couple of grand cheaper tho this car has been on the garages site for a few weeks. There are very few petrol models second hand in the market.

What the story with petrol cars re:tax and emissions in 2021. The tax on this petrol at the mo is about 390 euro

Was about to pull the trigger on the diesel but as I only do about 30 odd K a day, I'm wondering if this will have a negative impact on the engine wear.

Maybe if I gave it a decent blowout for at the weekend - might clear filters?

And really am I better waiting till new year for used cars.

    Fairly bamboozled now.

It's not a small purchase by any means but you really are over thinking this one.

Set a budget. Find a car you like that you can land within your budget, buy it and drive it. If you wait 3 months because you maybe possibly could potentially hypothetically hopefully save a few hundred euro you will never pull the trigger on a car you like while it is available.

It all boils down to your budget. What's more appealing to you a 2014 A4 with 120k FSH or a 2015 A4 80k partial service history?

Set your budget and go from there or else you'll spend weeks browsing done deal instead of driving a nice new car.
