Hi folks, I have an 07 BMW 320D when u go to start the car in the morning or when it hasn’t been driven for a while it takes a bit of time to start and a load of blue smoke comes out the exhaust, generally after that the smoke clears and it drives fine, any ideas what this might be?

The most common cause of blue exhaust smoke is oil leaking past engine seals and into the cylinders where it then mixes and burns with the fuel.
Blue exhaust smoke only at start-up can indicate worn piston seals or damaged or worn valve guides.

    Is there a rattling noise?

    Prob valve stem seals.

Piston seals? What do they look like?
Q, Is there a rattling noise?
A, Yes ( should hope so, all diesels rattle!! )

@ op, it probably needs heater plugs.

Thanks for the reply no rattling noise but the revs are a bit jittery for a minute or two

If you haven't changed the plugs in a while it could be time to do that now and see if it helps.

Because it's down a few cylinders until it warms up a bit.
