Going to look at a 2.0 D-4D TR model this week, 120k miles with a full service history. Anything I should look out for or anything that would put you off these cars?

Full and verifiable service history first thing.

In that service history check if the injectors have been replaced, known weak point. Issues such as poor trim and electronic handbrake were solved by 2013.

Other than that they don't give trouble tbh.

Only downside I can think to ownership has been the MPG, it's not great for a diesel and it has an annoyingly small fuel tank. I feel the higher than expected MPG costs are however offset but the cheap as chips and hassle free maintenance costs.

Check was injector work ever done
    Make sure electric handbrake works
See if alternator was ever replaced
Heating control for temp - lots are dodgy
With engine on and car stopped - turn steering wheel to one o'clock and 11 o'clock position fast... If you hear a clunk or knock, a lot of them have this issue.

If above items were never fixed then argue they are known common problems to see if they reduce the price as its fairly certain they will go with that milage.. .. No harm in asking

Edit - i see people in toyota owners club uk Facebook page have above problems on any year from about 09-14 or so.. They are a good car. Ive one myself years and hasn't cost a fortune to run or maintain.

TR is a UK spec so make sure to do a UK service history on it, the estates were popular as mini cabs in the UK.

I have one for the past 3 years. Other that the routine service I've replaced 2 bulbs. That's about it. Very reliable. There was some issue with the door hinges/doors cracking but bot front doors were replace by main dealer under warranty.

@passatman86 Just starting to hear that clunk occasionally. what is it?.

I've yet to find what it is but anywhere I've seen it mentioned people say not to worry

Toyota know about the problem but never done anything to fix it under warranty. They say its fine to drive with the issue. Having said that I needed to get tracking done 3 times since i owned the car "not saying its related". A fella on toyota owners Facebook page had a post 2 weeks ago about the steering noise and fixed it basically for free by greasing a part on the steering shaft and fitting a washer "he has a detailed explanation on fb".
