VW Golf 1.4 or 1.6

Hi folks. I currently drive a 2008 1.9tdi uk imported vw golf and have had it since 2009.
The car has rarely given me trouble and has 245000 miles. I used to drive 100 miles each way to work 3 days a week however transferred to work 15 miles from home 4 years ago. I want to change to another golf 2017 or 2018 preferably which will be imported before end of year I hope. I'm just wondering what peoples preferences are regarding a 1.6 diesel or 1.4 petrol engine. Also is it cheaper to import a petrol than it is a diesel. Are petrol cars cheaper to run then they used to be. I remember in 2011 when my car was in the garage I was give the loan of a 2010 petrol Toyota Corolla and I went through a fortune keeping it in petrol for 2 weeks. My budget is 16g for the car cleared.

If you’re looking at later ones you’ll be seeing 1.0 TSI models as the standard, they came out mid 2017 - these would be on a par with the 1.6 TDI in terms of performance, earlier versions would have the 1.2 TSI engine.

Your next step up is the 1.4 TSI or 2.0 TDI, which would be 150bhp.

Any of the petrol Golfs would be far lighter on petrol than the Corolla.

If you’re doing it, you need to do it now, as there will surely be a lot of people importing before the VRT goes up in January, plus all the Brexit stuff too. If you can’t get an appointment before end of year it’s just tough luck.

Might as well look at the Seat Leon too, as it’s basically the same car.

Thanks so much. Is it cheaper to import petrol cars or about the same as diesel do you know

My brother bought a 1.4tsi model brand new there nearly 3 years ago. Grand car to drive, plenty power and I've found it to be quite efficient whenever I've driven it. He averaged anywhere between 4.5-5.5L/100km. They consume a bit of oil when new but that settles down quickly.

I'd definitely go for the 1.4 over the old 1.6.

The petrols have slightly higher co2, so generally have a bit more VRT.
    Buy what suits your driving.

OP, you mention that you drove 200 miles a day for 3 days a week but you now live 15 miles from work? Are you still only driving to work 3 days a week? If so then that amounts to 90 miles a week now. Even allowing for additional reasonable personal mileage outside of work I wouldn't be leaving fuel economy dictate your choice strongly. As for which is the cheapest to import, your going to have to do maths on that one yourself. Diesels are out of favour in the UK so a diesel Golf might be cheaper to buy over a similar petrol model but when you factor in the new VRT and NOx rates from Jan 1st the landed price might make the petrol cheaper.

Thank you for your reply. I work 5 days now that I am closer to home but actually this year have worked from home since March due to covid but obviously I'll be back at work sometime. Looking at Donnelly group in the north I notice they have very few petrol golfs and they seem to be more expensive than the diesel alternative. My budget is 15g maybe 16 cleared but I'm beginning to think that's impossible

They have 2018 1.6tdi. Going to test drive tomorrow. They also have a 17 1.4 which I'll test drive too. Both coming in just under budget
