Kitchen radiator problem

My kitchen radiator is sending black streaks up the wall in two places. I can hear a fan in the radiator and wonder if that is the reason for this issue.
Any solutions would be very welcome - apart from getting a new one!

Can you post a photo of the rad?

Do you have lighted candles in the kitchen? This can cause those streaks.

Will do later. There is a grill on the top part of the rad which is allowing smuts through.

Yes, I do occasionally but as they are well away from the rad - I feel they are not the cause of the problem. I cleaned all the walls recently and repainted so I don't fancy another redo for some time!! It's just two lines up the wall and seems like there is something underneath those areas that are causing them.

I would be a bit surprised if that radiator is fan assisted.

Thanks John. I didn't realize I could remove the top grill so have just now cleaned it as there was a lot of dust inside it and hopefully that will solve the prroblem.

Yes, that's just an ordinary radiator, no fan inside. You may just be hearing the water flow through it if you put your ear up against it when the heating is on.

Anyway, as you say it's just dirt and dust inside it that's being carried upwards by heat convection. You can get special radiator brushes, basically a bit like a bottle brush but much longer, for getting into all the nooks and crannies to give it a good clean. Alternatively, if you can put your vacuum cleaner on "blow" instead of "suck" somehow, that's also a good way of dislodging dirt and dust.

Yes, I have just cleaned it and was amazed at the amount of accumulated dust inside it. I have a stove in the kitchen which might be responsible for a lot of the problem. Much obliged Alun and many thanks.
