20k-30k, what do you buy?

Morning lads, with the title in mind, what would you currently buy that's performance related for the budget above? I'm in this situation currently, and am set on an R32 GT-R purely as a weekender... But of course the impractical daily comes into mind with the likes of an RS6, FK2 or anything along those lines.

    What would YOU do?

How much are you willing to spend on it a year?

Do you need space, seats, boot?

Not in something that won't overtake the daily

GT86 would be my choice currently but they seem to divide opinions. Not a huge amount of power but more about driver enjoyment. Personal choice for me

I8? if you could get 60k together, the total ownership cost of that, probably similar to the 30k options been discussed if you had cash to buy outright, which most wont I assume...

    https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/bmw/i8/fpa/202008112340817?journey=Search

ok missed the last bit initially of practicality being somewhat important , maybe scrap I8

How so? I could suggest plenty of cars that would need > 3k a year to run between insurance, tax, and maintenance.

Well the fact I mentioned an RS6 tells you I don't mind how much it costs a year :pac:

    2019 MX5 perhaps!? It's what I'd choose anyway!

edit: Not really high performance at all, but it's rwd which is fun!

Not sure I could go from an LS460 during the week to an MX5 on the weekends :o

Would a Mustang be too big? It's probably not as engaging as you're seeking. The market for performance coupes seems to be dried up.

    M135?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,047 ✭✭✭Truckermal

Considering I had a LS 460 and had 30K I'd be looking Audi RS /S or Golf R. A very good B7 RS4 would be well in budget with change! Not sure about the Golf after they are very small in comparison to a LS!

Wouldn't bother with another barge either... What about something mad like a Land Rover and go on offroading trips....

330e? Nice performance without giving up practicality. decent performance, ~250BHP with the benefit of the electric motor for instant torque and although you said it's not a factor, running costs aren't too bad.

Panamera? Petrol Hybrid probably out of price range though, might have to go dirty!!

Saw the thread title and literally came in to say R32 GTR.

A45 AMG or if the budget permits, CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake. UK import.

If cheaper thrills in order, S2000 with Hard Top for the winter and then store away for summer and spend the change on whatever else you are into

Audi S3 310bhp UK import is within budget, <5 seconds to 60. Same engine as Golf R and might not be as dynamic a drive but in Black Edition, looks the part as opposed to the incognito R.

Jaguar XKR 5.0 supercharged if 2+2(tiny) if tax and fuel and service bills are irrelevant, and you want something that looks prestige and drives almost as good. 2010'sh with VRT from UK you might make in budget.

Lotus Exige if practicality rqts are zilch, fun & handling are required, you have no back problems and grand getting in and out, and you dont mind being so low you could drive under other cars. Its a riot, my brother owned one (after he had an Elise) and its amazing to drive. Clearly a pure drivers car.

CLA45 AMG shooting break is my ideal 2nd car for family, prob a couple years out for me to get until a 2015 model can be got for 25k euro all in from the UK. VRT / Brexit TBC of course...

Just to point out, this is for a weekend car. The LS is staying, I'm just fearful that if i bought an RS6 I'd end up using it more

Ah I get you, I just recalled a member on the motors forum renting (I think) one for his wedding day. I thought they were pretty cool.. Different strokes and all that!

Where are you viewing 4?! They're hard to find advertised anywhere.
Plenty of JDM options and likely won't depreciate at all. How about a GT4 celica?

    Good luck with the hunt

Someone has to break the duck, so here goes: Have you considered a Leaf or a Zoe (Don't the names just inspire thoughts of masculinity and the open road)?

But seriously a diesel Corolla. Do ya grand it will.

One in Dublin, one in Donegal, two in Kerry and actually two in Wicklow as I'm viewing those tomorrow. A brother of one of those in Wicklow has 4 or 5 as well, of which I may view one or two.

I know of plenty more, there's at least 30 of them in the country.

This is what I'd be buying if I had 30k burning a hole in my pocket.

Perhaps true, but with only one of each currently on Donedeal I'd be taking the more practical one with a years warranty. ;)

997 911 Carrera. Great value on them especially convertible models. That or a 996 which is crazy value
Edit to add, always avant over saloon on all Audis. They're so plain looking normally, the avant just makes them sublime :P
